Big Second Half Propels Louisiana To 37-23 Win Over ULM

Cajuns go 6-0 on road for first time since 2020; advances to SBC Championship Game

MONROE – Zylan Perry rushed for a career-high 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns while the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns gained 133 of its 223 total yards on the ground in the fourth quarter to pull away and defeat ULM, 37-23, in the Sun Belt Conference regular-season finale for both teams Saturday at Malone Stadium.

Bill Davis gained 78 yards with a touchdown while Chandler Fields completed 17 of 26 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns as Louisiana (10-2, 7-1 SBC) recorded its fourth 10-win season in the past six years. The Ragin' Cajuns, who outscored ULM (5-7, 3-5 SBC), 24-10 in the second half, capped off an unbeaten 6-0 record on the road for the first time since 2020.

Kody Jackson intercepted a pair of passes for Louisiana, which never trailed after Fields connected with Tavion Smith on a 4-yard scoring pass on the Ragin' Cajuns initial drive of the second half. Louisiana built a 20-16 lead after three quarters before Perry gained 102 yards on 12 carries in the fourth quarter, including a 7-yard scoring run for a 27-16 advantage.

Louisiana, which advanced to next week's 2024 Hercules Tires Sun Belt Football Championship against either Marshall or Georgia Southern, took a 6-3 lead in the first quarter after Jackson picked off his second pass of the season and returned it to the ULM 27. The Ragin' Cajuns would score six plays later as Perry sliced his way in from 1-yard out.

After ULM took a 10-6 lead on Aiden Armenta's 7-yard scoring pass to Tyler Griffin, the Ragin' Cajuns would lose their second fumble of the season before Jackson would post his second interception of the half one play later at the UL 12.

The Ragin' Cajuns would drive 88 yards in 11 plays with Fields finding Lance LeGendre in the end zone for a 6-yard scoring pass and a 13-10 lead.

Fields, making his third start against ULM and finished 18-for-20 in last year's 52-21 win at Cajun Field, guided Louisiana downfield on a 7-play, 80-yard drive to open the second half and break a 13-13 contest. The redshirt senior connected with Jacob Bernard on a 38-yard pass to the ULM 30 before finding Robert Williams for a 25-yard strike to the ULM 4.

The Warhawks would try to claw back into the game behind the running of freshman Ahmad Hardy, driving to the UL 5 before settling for a field goal after Louisiana's Kadarius Miller and Jordan Lawson combined to drop Armenta for a 6-yard loss on third-and-goal.

Louisiana would respond with a 13-play, 65-yard drive, which was aided by a ULM penalty on fourth-and-2.

Kenneth Almendares' 26-yard field goal with 6:11 remaining gave Louisiana a 30-16 lead before ULM would go 75 yards in seven plays to close to within 30-23 on Hardy's 8-yard scoring run around the left side.

Perry, who became the first Ragin' Cajuns rusher since Chris Smith (238) and Montrell Johnson (150) to rush for 150 yards or more in a game, opened an 8-play scoring drive with rushes of 21 and 10 yards to get into ULM territory. The Ragin' Cajuns would keep the ball on the ground and would ice the game when Davis scored on a 24-yard run on fourth-and-1.

K.C. Ossai led all players with 13 tackles, and eclipsing the 100-tackle mark in a season for the first time in his career. The senior, who increased his career total to 266 tackles, would collect Louisiana's third takeaway of the day when he picked off Armenta in the final minute.

Tyrone Lewis added 10 stops for Louisiana with Keyon Martin adding seven tackles and a forced fumble on the game's first play from scrimmage. Lawson added seven tackles for the Ragin' Cajuns with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss while Monroe native Carmycah Glass posted six tackles.

Hardy led ULM on the ground with 172 yards on 28 carries. Armenta was 15-for-31 for 168 yards and three interceptions for the Warhawks while Carl Glass, Jr., led ULM with 11 tackles.
