No. 4-ranked South African Junior golfer fourth addition for defending SBC Champs
LAFAYETTE – Matthew Lotz, the fourth-ranked player on the South African Junior Golf circuit, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns beginning in the 2023-24 season, announced on Thursday by head coach Theo Sliman.
Lotz, the winner of the South African Junior Boys International Championship, is the fourth newcomer for the defending Sun Belt Conference Tournament champions joining Ross Anderson (Lake Charles, La.), Dillon Barnard (Montgomery, Texas) and Adam Trahan (Crowley, La.).
"We are extremely excited to have Matthew Lotz join our program," said Sliman. "Coming in as the fourth-ranked U19 South African, we look for Matt to make an immediate impact and help this team build off the spring success we recently saw.
"Matt is an exceptional competitor and very seasoned young man. Matt has all we are looking for in a student athlete, a strong work ethic, fearless competitor and a drive and hunger to get better will suit him well here in Lafayette. It will be an honor and privilege to coach Matt and I look forward to getting to work with him and our team in August."
Lotz, who began his golf career at age 9, finished as the runner-up at the South African Boys U-19 with a score of 13-under-par. He was part of the Western Province U15 team that won back-to-back interprovincial Tournaments and claimed the 2020 Western Province Bridge Fund Junior Open with a score of 6-under par.
A seven-time member on the Western Province Junior team, Lotz won the 2021 Atlantic Beach Junior Golf Championships with a 6-under-138 and the Rondebosch Junior Open at 4-under.
