Louisiana has near clean sweep of major awards; seven players honored

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team captured 4-of-5 major awards on the 2023 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana collegiate softball team, the program's highlight in the annual awards handed out by the organization.

The Ragin' Cajuns top headliners included: Karly Heath (Hitter of the Year), Sam Landry (Pitcher of the Year), Mihyia Davis (Freshman of the Year) and Gerry Glasco (Coach of the Year).

It's the fourth time that the Ragin' Cajuns have won four major All-Louisiana softball awards in one season. Louisiana also accomplished the feat in 2012, 2008 and 1992.

Heath, Landry and Davis were joined on the first team by Lauren Allred. Rounding out the group of seven Cajuns honored was second team selection Sophie Piskos and honorable mention selections Meghan Schorman and Alexa Langeliers.

A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel of media and sports publicists selected the All-Louisiana team, based on statistics and performances through the teams' conference tournaments.

Heath, a senior from North Augusta, S.C., hit .360 with 24 extra base hits — including 14 home runs — and 43 RBI during Louisiana's run to the Sun Belt Conference regular season and conference tournament championships. She also was Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and earned NFCA All-America Second Team accolades.

Landry, a sophomore from Mont Belvieu, Texas, was 17-4 with a 2.02 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings. She was the outstanding player of the Sun Belt Tournament, which the Cajuns won with a 1-0 decision against Marshall in the championship game. Landry pitched that shutout, a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Davis, from Lovelady, Texas and the SBC Freshman of the Year, hit .383 with two homers, 18 RBI and 46 stolen bases in 53 attempts prior to NCAA play, ultimately finishing as the nation's leader in stolen bases (52). Glasco's Cajuns finished 50-16 overall, 22-2 in the Sun Belt (first place), claimed a fourth consecutive SBC regular season and tournament title, reached the super regional round of NCAA nationals and finished with a No. 9 RPI and Top 20 rankings across the board. Glasco became the ninth softball coach to win the state award multiple times, previously receiving the honor in 2019.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Louisiana has claimed Hitter of the Year each of the last four All-Louisiana awards (2019, 2021-23). Karly Heath is the 11th Ragin' Cajun to capture the award since its inception in 2003.
  • Sam Landry and Southeastern's Bailey Krolczyk were the only players this season to receive every available first team vote.
  • Mihyia Davis claimed Louisiana's first Freshman of the Year honor since 2017. Davis, along with Lauren Allred, was among a group of four first-team freshmen; no All-Louisiana softball team from 2007-22 had as many.
  • Karly Heath earned repeat honors on the first team, one of only three individuals on the 27-person team to ahcieve the status.
  • Louisiana's all-time total of All-Louisiana major awards increases to 80. The second-place total is LSU's 36.
