Softball Runner Thrown Out at Second

Louisiana Falls to Washington in Super Regional Opener

5/27/2023 1:11:00 AM | Softball

The two teams return to the diamond in Seattle on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (CDT)

SEATTLE – The No. 22-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team fell to No. 5 Washington, 8-0, in five innings on Friday, May 26 to begin play in the NCAA Seattle Super Regional at Husky Softball Stadium.

Louisiana (50-15) and Washington (42-13) played to a standoff over the first three innings of scoreless softball and only one hit recorded for either side, before the Huskies would become the first to break through on the scoreboard.

The Ragin' Cajuns had the best scoring opportunities first, getting a runner to third base in the first inning before a great defensive play prevented the visitors from scoring and later in the fourth inning when two runners were aboard after Jourdyn Campbell's two-out double.

Once the breakthrough happened, Washington scored all eight of its runs in the fourth and fifth inning – plating five in the fourth and three in the third. The Huskies had a pair of home runs by Sydney Stewart and Rylee Holtorf before Alana Johnson plated a pair of runs in the fifth and Holtorf ended the game with an RBI single to left.

Louisiana had an excellent opportunity to get back into the game in the top of the fifth as the bases were juiced for Karly Heath, who hit a deep fly ball to left field that was caught just shy of the wall.

Ruby Meylan held the Ragin' Cajuns scoreless and allowed two hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings.

Sam Landry was dealt the loss as she gave up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts over 3-1/3 innings of work before being relieved by Chloe Riassetto.
