SB Lauren Allred Celebrates Triple vs. Texas State 4.14.23

Quick-Strike Offense Carries Louisiana Past Texas State in Series Opener

4/14/2023 10:30:00 PM | Softball

Ragin’ Cajuns plate all five runs – with two-out hits – in first two at bats

LAFAYETTE – Early clutch two-out hitting propelled the No. 25-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball to a 5-3 win over Texas State on Friday, April 14 in Game 1 of the Sun Belt Conference series between the two teams at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

Louisiana (31-12, 12-1 SBC) stretched its conference winning streak to seven games and increased its lead in the Sun Belt standings with Marshall's loss to Coastal Carolina. The Ragin' Cajuns also moved within one win of extending their streak of consecutive SBC series won which currently stands at 77 straight.

After Meghan Schorman and the defense weathered an early test from the Bobcats (26-16-1, 6-5-1 SBC), the Ragin' Cajuns offense went to work in the bottom of the first loading the bases to set up a two-out, two-run single from Alexa Langeliers for a quick strike off of Jessica Mullins.

In the second inning it was a two-out walk once again that led to Louisiana widening the gap on Mullins and the Bobcats. Lauren Allred took full advantage, looping a bases-clearing, three-run triple down the left field line out of the reach of a diving Ciara Trahan to increase the advantage to 5-0.

The remainder of the contest was controlled by both pitching staffs. Schorman (4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3K) carried the shutout bid into the fifth inning while the Bobcats turned to Analisa Soliz to keep the Ragin' Cajuns off balance after she relieved Mullins in the fourth inning.

Texas State placed two runners aboard the base path in the fifth inning with back-to-back, one-out singles and took advantage of a pair of two-out Cajuns miscues to push across three runs and trim the deficit to 5-3.

Kandra Lamb (2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 K) stepped in and ended the Bobcats rally with a strikeout of JJ Smith to close the fifth inning. Lamb then closed the door shut the final two innings, yielding only a one-out walk in the seventh inning, to collect the save.

Schorman improved to 6-0 in Sun Belt play and picked up her team-leading 12th win overall. Lamb posted a save for the second straight SBC outing and delivered her fifth shutout relief performance in the past three weeks (since JMU series opener).

Allred posted her fourth multiple-RBI game in Sun Belt play and took over the team lead with 15 RBI in conference games. Langeliers also notched her fourth multiple-RBI game of Sun Belt play and increased her overall season RBI total to 30 which matches Karly Heath for team-high honors.

The first-inning strike marked the 22nd time (out of 43 games) that the Ragin' Cajuns scored in their first at bat, improving to 19-3 when doing so. Louisiana has scored in the first inning in six of its last seven SBC games.

Louisiana upped its all-time series lead over Texas State to 46-8 which now includes a 20-5 edge in Sun Belt regular season games.
