Ortego Qualifies For 116th Annual Southern Amateur

SBC Freshman of the Year claims top spot in qualifier
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golfer Eli Ortego qualified for the 116th Southern Amateur Championship after shooting a 5-under-par 67 on Tuesday in a sectional qualifier at the University Club.
Ortego, the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, will compete in the Southern Amateur Championship at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., on July 13-16, 2022 after finishing three strokes ahead of runner-up Luke Haskew.Â
As a freshman for the Ragin' Cajuns, Ortego made 12 appearances playing in 35 rounds while posting the second-lowest scoring average (72.97) on the team and fifth-lowest in school history. The Lafayette native recorded six top-20 finishes on the season with three top-10 performances.
