No. 21 LSU started with four runs in the first inning, holds off No. 20 Louisiana’s advances
BATON ROUGE – A four-run lead after one inning of play held up for No. 21 LSU as the host-Tigers led throughout in a 5-2 win over No. 20 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball on Saturday, March 5 at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.
The game completed the Ragin' Cajuns participation in the Louisiana/LSU Crossover Invitational. For the Tigers, it finished a two-game sweep of the matchups between the I-10 neighbors in the tournament.
Louisiana (12-4) continued to battle despite the early deficit with Meghan Schorman retiring the first four batters she faced and going on to limit LSU (15-6) to a single run and three hits the final 5-1/3 innings.
While Schorman was settling down the Tigers offense, the Ragin' Cajuns bats chipped away at the deficit scoring a run in the third inning after back-to-back, two-out singles and another run in the fourth inning on a Sophie Piskos solo home run.
A key double play turned by LSU's Taylor Pleasants in the fifth inning shut down a potential Ragin' Cajuns rally, then a defensive miscommunication in the bottom half of the inning led to the Tigers gaining an insurance run.
Ali Kilponen worked around the first two Ragin' Cajuns reaching base in the sixth inning, then in the seventh inning Shelbi Sunseri recorded three straight grounds outs after a leadoff walk.
Schorman wound up with seven strikeouts during her relief effort after LSU plated four runs in the opening frame off of Kandra Lamb.
