Landry and Quiñones Steer Louisiana Softball to Series-Opening Win

3/25/2022 9:53:00 PM | Softball

Ragin’ Cajuns gain the early upper-hand in Sun Belt series with UT Arlington

LAFAYETTE – Five shutdown innings pitched by Sam Landry and a pair of timely hits from Ari Quiñones led the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team to a 9-1 (6 inn.) win over UT Arlington in Game 1 of a Sun Belt Conference series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

The Ragin' Cajuns (18-8, 5-2 Sun Belt) picked up their second straight win by a run-rule margin and moved within one win of extending their streak of consecutive Sun Belt series wins which stood at 66 straight entering the weekend.

Landry handcuffed the visiting Mavericks (11-12, 3-4 Sun Belt) by scattering four hits and striking out eight during the five scoreless innings she worked in the circle.

Quiñones started a rally for the Ragin' Cajuns with both of her base hits, breaking up a scoreless pitcher's duel in the third inning with an RBI double for the first of two runs in the frame and then delivering an RBI single in the fifth inning to kick off a four-run spurt that upped the lead to 6-0.

Melissa Mayeux put the exclamation point on Louisiana's triumph when she delivered her first home run of the season in the sixth inning, increasing the advantage to 8-1.

Mayeux (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBI) and Quiñones (2-for-2, double, 2 RBI) were two of the four Ragin' Cajuns to record a multiple-hit game as the squad built up 11 base hits off of UTA pitching. Stormy Kotzelnick and Kayla Falterman also delivered two-hit efforts.

Landry picked up her team-leading eighth victory, improving to 8-2 on the season. The collegiate rookie moved to 3-0 in Sun Belt play and extended her active streak of consecutive scoreless innings pitched to nine dating back to the Georgia Southern series finale.

UTA wouldn't get a baserunner off of Landry until the third inning and a runner past second base until the fifth inning. A key strikeout with two runners aboard in the fourth inning and then three straight outs recorded after the first two Mavs reached base in the fifth inning kept Landry's unblemished performance intact.
