National watch list recognizes the top interior lineman in the country
LAFAYETTE – For the second consecutive season, sophomore guard O'Cyrus Torrence was recognized as one of the top interior lineman in the country after he was named to the 2021 Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced on Tuesday morning.
Of the 80 returning interior lineman listed, Torrence is one of just six performers representing the Sun Belt Conference and one of 26 guards.
Torrence, who picked up First Team Preseason All-Conference honors, started in all 11 of Louisiana's games in 2020 and was an impactful member of the program's offensive line unit that ranked fifth nationally and first in the Sun Belt in tackles-for-loss allowed (3.64) and seventh nationally and first in the league in sacks allowed (0.82).
The line opened up the Ragin' Cajuns' rushing attack, which ranked 21st in the nation with 213 yards per game. As a result of his play, Torrence was named a Second Team All-Conference performer and helped the line earn Joe Moore Award Semifinalist honors.
The Outland Trophy, celebrating 75 years since its founding, is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.
Louisiana Football opens the 2021 season and the fourth year of the Billy Napier era on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Texas. Kickoff in Austin is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast nationally on FOX.
In total, six Ragin' Cajuns games, four of which will be played at Cajun Field, have been selected for national broadcasts during the 2021 season. To view the team's complete schedule, click here.
