Louisiana's secondary features experienced returners and lengthy newcomers
LAFAYETTE – With the 2020 season rapidly approaching, the Ragin' Cajuns return a loaded group of defensive backs while adding a talented freshmen group into the fray.
Â
Highlighting the returners at safety are Percy Butler, Bralen Trahan and Kam Pedescleaux.
Â
Butler, a mainstay in the backfield in 2019, played in all 14 games with 12 starts. The Plaquemine native owns the second-most tackles on the team out of returning players and notched one tackle-for-loss, two pass breakups and three forced fumbles last year.
Â
Working beside Butler this season will be a combination of Trahan and Pedescleaux. Trahan earned seven starts at safety in 2019, while Pedescleaux was a key rotational piece for now defensive coordinator Patrick Toney's secondary.
Â
The Cajuns will also use Blair Brooks, Cameron Solomon, Brandon Bishop, Patrick Mensah and Ty'Darien Quinney at safety, with newcomers Tyree Skipper and Scottie Johnson looking to earn playing time as well.
Â
After losing Michael Jacquet III at cornerback, Louisiana will call on Asjlin Washington, Jayrin Wilson and Mekhi Garner to step up and earn a starting spot next to Eric Garror in the fall. Garror started in all 14 games, posting a team-leading eight pass breakups and 35 total tackles.
Â
Redshirt freshman Bobby Holmes could be roped into this group as well as one of the few returning cornerbacks on the team.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns brought in a wealth of young, lengthy talent at the cornerback position in Dabari Hawkins, Caleb Anderson, Trey Amos and Courtline Flowers. All four measure in at over 6'0" feet tall and held major offers before deciding to join the Ragin' Cajuns. Korian Wilson and Patrick Marshall are other rookies to keep an eye on as well.
Â
Louisiana Football is set to open the 2020 campaign on Saturday, September 12, when it makes its first-ever trip to Ames, Iowa, to take on the Iowa State Cyclones.
Â
Should disruptions or modifications to the 2020 season occur due to the coronavirus, the Department of Athletics will quickly communicate plans to fans and season ticket holders regarding accommodations for pre-purchased tickets.
