Returning Veterans Huge Plus for 2020 Receiving Corps
LAFAYETTE – Veterans Jalen Williams, Peter LeBlanc and Jamal Bell look to help Louisiana's receiving corps overcome the loss of Ja'Marcus Bradley and Jarrod Jackson as the trio headlines a talented group of receivers coming back for the Ragin' Cajuns in 2020.
Williams, a redshirt senior, should be one of the main targets on the outside this year. The 6-foot-3, 219-pound wideout hauled in 21 passes for 279 yards and one score last season.
LeBlanc is slated to build off of his solid true-freshman campaign. The New Iberia, La., native started in eight games and had his best performance as a Cajun in the Sun Belt Championship Game against Appalachian State when he brought in three passes for 118 yards and two scores.
Playing through injury last season, Bell is another receiver that should play a big role in Louisiana's offense. Bell is the returning leader in reception yards and had his most impressive game of the 2019 season against Mississippi State when he recorded eight receptions for 113 yards.
Louisiana is also hoping to see contributions from Calif Gossett, Cassius Allen, Brian Smith Jr., Devon Pauley. Gossett, Allen and Smith, Jr., tower over opposing cornerbacks standing at 6-foot-6, 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-4, respectively, while Pauley is a speedy slot receiver that can potentially play a role in the Ragin' Cajuns' offense.
Louisiana brings in a new pool of wide receivers from the high school, JUCO and Division I transfer ranks that will only add to the talent level inside Tim Leger's receiving room.
The first-year players that are slated to make an impact are: Dontae Fleming, Reginald Johnson, Jr., Kyren Lacy and Errol Rogers, Jr. Fleming, an alum from East St. John High School, held a Memphis offer before signing with the Cajuns, while Johnson owned offers from Houston and Virginia Tech. Lacy had late offers from Miami and Virginia, while Rogers, Jr., a Lafayette native, won three state championships at Lafayette Christian Academy and was a member on the All-State team during high school.
Two of the more interesting prospects added to the receiving room are JUCO transfer Trevor Russell and Oklahoma transfer Golden Eke. Russell spent two years at Mesa Community College, hauling in 27 passes for 317 yards during his freshman season, while Eke comes to the Cajuns as a two-sport athlete and will compete on the gridiron as well as in track starting in the spring.
The Ragin' Cajuns also have a plethora of other wide receivers that could be competing for playing time in Kaleb Carter, Jacob Bernard, converted cornerback Amir McDaniel and Dalen Cambre.
Louisiana Football opens the 2020 campaign on Saturday, September 5, when it welcomes in-state foe McNeese State to Cajun Field.
Should disruptions or modifications to the 2020 season occur due to the coronavirus, the Department of Athletics will quickly communicate plans to fans and season ticket holders regarding accommodations for pre-purchased tickets.
