LAFAYETTE - With the fall semester wrapped up, and the holiday season now underway, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team has its sights set on retuning to the field in spring 2021.

Head coach Gerry Glasco takes a moment to reflect on the program's growth over the past few months and offer insight into a fall practice period unlike any other experienced before.

Q: What were some of the unique aspects of this fall season, and how was your staff and team able to adapt and adjust?
GG: No outside competition made this fall very unique. However, the great depth of our roster allowed us to have enough game-type situations that I felt most likely made this the most productive fall since I've been here.

The competition of each game in our intrasquad scrimmages was amazing to behold. I felt the team became much more competitive as the fall advanced and left us in a really good place going into spring.

Q: How would you assess your team's progress over the fall practice period and do you feel your objectives were met?
GG: I thought our offense made great gains, especially with the way we were able to incorporate speed back into our unit's weapons. I also feel we will have more power this spring than at any point in the four years that I've been here. We may also have the fastest team speed that we've had in the last four years.

Defensively, I thought we learned a lot about our infield and our outfield and are now ready to go into January and set positions as we get ready for real competition. I felt like our pitching improved as the fall went on and I definitely believe we have had added significant depth to our bullpen.

Q: Which players do you feel made the most progress in the fall session and were there any who surprised you?
GG: I felt like Jade Gortarez and Jenna Kean became much more comfortable in a Louisiana uniform as the fall went on. Alissa Dalton had an absolutely outstanding fall that was as good as she has played for us over the previous three seasons, I believe she has set herself up to have a really special season for us this spring.

Karly Heath, Kandra Lamb, Casey Dixon and Vanessa Foreman all showed that they will compete to become the No. 2 pitcher on our staff. It's extremely nice to have several pitchers competing for that second starting position. We expect that at least one of these athletes will develop into a reliable, go-to starter for us in the near future.

Taylor Roman, who is still listed as a freshman, is going to be an amazing athlete to watch due to the tremendously rare talent that she possesses.

Q: What was your message to the team prior to their departure for the holiday break?
GG: Come back ready for extremely intense - and highly competitive - practices and intrasquad scrimmages because we want to be ready to compete with the top teams in the country when the season starts. We are planning on having several Top 15 teams on our schedule and it's going to be really important for us to show early on that we can compete and win against these teams.
