Reigning Sun Belt champions to begin implementing plans for highly anticipated spring season

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball officially kicked off its fall season on Friday as the 2020 squad gathered on the field at Lamson Park for the first team practice.

The session of fall workouts is scheduled to run through Sunday, Nov. 3, as Louisiana begins laying the groundwork for its third season under the guidance of head coach Gerry Glasco.

"It is an absolute thrill to be back on the field," Glasco remarked. "We look forward to seeing how all the new and old pieces fit together as a team.

"Certainly, there is an enormous amount of talent assembled," Glasco added. "Now we must identify the individuals who can blend and play together."

Weekday sessions will primarily be centered around fundamentals, while weekends will consist of intrasquad scrimmages. The squad will also compete in four exhibition contests, three of which are at Lamson Park beginning on Friday, Sept. 27.

The Ragin' Cajuns seek to build upon a highly successful 2019 season which saw the squad sweep the Sun Belt Conference's regular season and tournament championships, boast a Top 10 national ranking, earn the program's 21st consecutive NCAA tournament bid and record the first 50-win campaign since 2012.

"Our expectations are extremely higher this season," Glasco stated. "We must use this critical fall practice season effectively and efficiently in order to be ready to play well as a team early in the spring season.

"Our main focus this fall will be to find our best team – the group of 10-13 players – that will give us our best shot to advance to the WCWS in June 2020."

Louisiana's list of returners is headlined by NFCA All-American pitcher and Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson, Sun Belt Player of the Year Alissa Dalton and Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year Sarah Hudek. Other returning starters include center fielder Raina O'Neal, first baseman Kourtney Gremillion and catcher Julie Rawls.

The group of newcomers is highlighted by four Division I transfers (Megan Kleist and Mia Camuso of Oregon as well as Missouri tandem Callie Martin and Geana Torres) and the first freshman signing class of the Glasco era.

"We have to replace a great third baseman in Kara Gremillion, the offense and leadership of Lexie Comeaux and Alison Deville, as well as find a replacement for the speedy Keeli Milligan," Glasco mentioned. "A player like any of those four is hard to replace individually. We have the talent to fill those voids, but only if we work really hard as a team and try to improve all over the field together."
