Sokol, Burger Lead @RaginCajunsTRK In Day One At Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE – Graham Sokol earned a first-place finish in the men's hammer throw while Hannes Burger turned in the third-best time in the nation in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team after the first day of the 2019 Louisiana Classics on Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
The final day of the two-day event will begin with field events at 10 a.m., with running events starting at 2 p.m. Admission to the event is free and live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com.
Sokol led a 1-2-3 finish for Louisiana in the hammer throw, posting the fifth-best throw (185-11) in school history and edging teammates Richard Delphin (185-10) and Dominique Williams (184-5) for the title.
Burger, the Sun Belt Conference indoor champion in the 3,000- and 5,000-meters, posted a time of 9 minutes, 12.95 seconds to lead a 1-2 finish for Louisiana with Jonathan Kimutai (9:45.26) finishing second.
In the women's javelin, Claire Meyers earned a third-place finish for Louisiana in the cool, windy conditions, recording a mark of 138-2. MacKenzie Marze placed seventh overall for the Ragin' Cajuns with a throw of 126-2.
Jayla Stevenson-Collins (144-2) and Alexis James (143-0) placed ninth and 11th overall in the women's hammer throw for Louisiana. Kalei Matthews, who was competing unattached, claimed the title in the women's 200-meters (24.43) with Erica Stewart (25.48) finishing 12th and Kaprecia Cowans (25.62) 16th.
A pair of Ragin' Cajuns – Shadrack Kipngetich (33:29.56) and George Femmer (33:35.14) – finished second and third overall among collegiate runners in the men's 10,000-meters.
