Action-packed schedule features 32 games at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park for first season of Deggs Era
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Baseball has set its schedule for the upcoming 2020 season, first-year head coach Matt Deggs announced on Thursday.
The schedule for the Ragin' Cajuns includes 32 home games, 21 road contests and three games at the Diamond Invitational, held at Blue Wahoos Stadium, in Pensacola, Florida.
"It's a rock solid schedule," Deggs said. "It's a blue collar, hard-nosed schedule that really has no breaks. Coach Anthony Babineaux has done this a long time and has put together some of the top schedules in the country. We are making sure we're battle tested before we get into Sun Belt play and we're a team that has a chance to grow, learn and get better as the year goes on to play our best baseball in April, May and June."
Season ticket renewal forms will be mailed out to Ragin' Cajuns fans by the Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office at the Cajundome beginning next week. More ticket information can be obtained by calling (337) 265-2170, or by visiting the office in-person.
The Ragin' Cajuns open the year with a matchup against Southeastern Louisiana at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park on Friday, Feb. 14, with first pitch at 6 p.m. In addition to the Friday night opener, Louisiana will also host Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Feb. 15, and Sunday, Feb. 16.
Louisiana will play 11 of its first 13 games at home, with the two road contests played on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Hammond against SLU and Tuesday, March 3, in Houston against Rice. Aside from those contests, the Ragin' Cajuns will host three-game series with Virginia Tech (Feb. 21-23) and Sam Houston State (Feb. 28-March 1), with games against Tulane (Feb. 19) and Rice (March 3) sprinkled into the mix.
"That's a product of having an incredible fan base and an incredible facility," Deggs said. "Teams want to come and play here. There's a balance there with being at home and stacking up road wins, as well."
Louisiana's first true road test will be at the Diamond Invitational. The squad will play three games in Pensacola from March 6-8 against Samford, Michigan State and Troy.
Following a road game down I-10 at McNeese State on March 10, Deggs' group returns for a five-game home swing which includes its conference opener against Coastal Carolina (March 13-15) and games against Lamar (March 17) and Nicholls State (March 18).
Louisiana then travels to Appalachian State (March 20-22) and Georgia State (March 27-29) for road conference series, with a home date with Louisiana Tech on March 24.
Post-Georgia State, the Ragin' Cajuns host McNeese State (March 31) and have a road game at Tulane (April 1).
A home conference series against UT Arlington opens the April home slate, followed by a trip to Baton Rouge for a Tuesday, April 7, showdown against Louisiana State.
Louisiana will be in San Marcos, Texas, taking on Texas State from April 9-11, before hosting Houston (April 14, 15) and Little Rock (April 17-19). Following the homestand, the Ragin' Cajuns take on South Alabama in Mobile (April 24-26) and Louisiana Tech in Ruston (April 28).
To round out the rest of the schedule, the team welcomes in Georgia Southern (May 1-3), travels to Arkansas State (May 8-10) and hosts ULM (May 14-16).
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held in Montgomery, Alabama, at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium, the home of the Double-A affiliate Montgomery Biscuits of the Tampa Bay Rays Organization.
"When you look at our schedule, the Sun Belt Conference is traditionally a top-10 conference in the country, so that's a positive that we have going for us," Deggs said. "We also need to test ourselves at the same time. When you really break the schedule down, you look at Q1 wins, which is wins against the RPI top-50, and Q2 wins, which is against 51-100.
"When you break down this schedule, and schedules in the past, we give ourselves 30-plus opportunities in Q1 and Q2 games. The magic number for that is 15 and 16 wins. You want to be above .500 or exactly at .500 in those games. You give yourself a chance if you do well in that metric."
