LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball announced the addition of five student-athletes to the program's 2018-19 recruiting class.
Â
Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot has added Louisiana natives Chloe Hamilton (Breaux Bridge, La./Teurlings Catholic HS) and Macie Grubbs (New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy), Texas natives Brianna Franklin (Richmond, Texas/George Ranch HS) and Tia Smith (Houston, Texas/ Stephen F. Austin HS), and German native Franziska Duhr (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS).
Â
These additions increase Louisiana's number of incoming student-athletes for the 2018 season to seven. They join Kelsey Bennett (Allen, Texas/Allen HS) and Desiree Johnson (Forney, Texas/Forney HS) who signed with the program in November.
Â
Hamilton is joining high school teammate Lexi Hebert on the Ragin' Cajuns roster. A libero at Lafayette-based Teurlings Catholic, Hamilton scooped 453 digs as a senior in helping lead the Rebels to a fourth consecutive state championship. She was named the 2017 All-Acadiana MVP.
Â
Grubbs is another defensive standout joining the Ragin' Cajuns. In totaling 2,316 career digs, she scooped 400-plus four times for Ursuline Academy. She received all-state accolades twice as a libero (freshman and sophomore) and twice as an outside hitter (junior and senior).
Â
Franklin collected 568 digs over her final two seasons at George Ranch High School competing as a defensive specialist and libero. She was twice named to the all-district squad and earned academic all-state honors her senior season. She helped lead Houston Skyline Juniors to the 2018 USAV Junior National Championship tournament.
Â
Smith was a two-time, all-district middle blocker for Stephen F. Austin High School. As a junior in 2016 she posted 281 kills and 97 blocks, ranking her Top 5 in both categories in District 20-6A, and received first team all-district accolades. She was voted team captain for the 2017 season. Her Houston Juniors Elite South squad advanced to 2018 USAV Junior National Championship tournament.
Â
Duhr competed at outside and right side hitter as well as setter for Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 6-foot-2 product is expected to compete at setter for the Ragin' Cajuns. Duhr, who moved to the United States prior to her junior season, capped off her prep career with a 300-plus kill and 100-plus ace campaign last fall.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (21-11, 13-3 SBC in 2017) are seeking to build upon the program's finest season in the Sun Belt Conference era (1991-present). During the 2017 season, the squad raced out to a school-record 7-0 start in league play, posted the first winning conference mark since 2002 and set the school record for SBC wins. The reward was the program's highest seed ever (No. 3) in the SBC Tournament.
Â
Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot, preparing for the 11th season of her tenure, has a roster that features three returning All-Sun Belt Conference performers in middle blocker Dree'Ana Abram, libero Sydney Davis and 2017 SBC Freshman of the Year Hali Wisnoskie.
