Incoming Ragin' Cajuns freshman Jan Galka reached the semifinals in doubles at the ITF Professional Tournament
USTRON, POLAND – Incoming Louisiana Men's Tennis freshman Jan Galka kicked off his summer with a bang, reaching the semifinals of the Ustron Cup in doubles, winning two matches along the way, to earn eight points towards his ATP World Ranking.
Â
WHAT IS THE USTRON CUP: The Ustron Cup is a tournament that's a part of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Professional Tour. It's played on a clay court and is held in Ustron, Poland. The singles qualifying draw had 48 contestants, and the main draw held 32. As for the doubles draw it was 16 deep and that's where Galka made his run.
Â
GALKA'S RUN: Galka partnered up with Michal Bedra, who is also from Poland, and the duo entered the tournament as a wild card draw.  They began the first round facing David Poljak, ranked No. 524 (singles) and No. 535 (doubles) in the ATP, and Daniel Kossek. Galka and his partner mounted a comeback, dropping the first set, before storming back to win back-to-back tiebreakers. They finished off the Poljak/Kossek duo, 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-8, to move onto the quarterfinals.
Â
In the quarterfinals, Galka and Bedra faced off with the No. 2 seeded grouping of Mateusz Kowalczyk, ATP ranked No. 270 in doubles, and Jakub Grzegorczyk. Galka and Bedra again found themselves in a battle, with their second straight match being decided in a tiebreaker, but Galka and Bedra dug in deep to get the win, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8, to advance to the semifinals.
Â
During the semifinals Galka and Bedra ran out of gas, losing to the duo of Luca Castelnuovo and Mikalai Haliak, 6-2, 6-2. But the run that Galka and Bedra was a solid one and it's a strong way for Galka to begin the summer.

QUOTEWORTHY:
(Head Coach Mark Jeffrey)
"With Janek picking up eight ATP points and a professional ranking in doubles we feel encouraged that he will start the year off quickly in the fall and be ready to compete in the tough fall tournaments we're a part of this year. I know Janek is only going to get better as he keeps competing throughout the summer and we are excited for him to come to Lafayette and play for the Cajuns."
