Tolson Posts Best Finish In Program History
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team claimed its first tournament title since the 2013-14 season finishing in first place at the Lake Charles Invitational with an overall score of 14-under par (850) on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,869-yard Country Club at the Golden Nugget golf course.
The Cajuns won the tournament by 12 strokes over No. 39 Marquette. The team victory is the first since Louisiana claimed the Sam Hall Intercollegiate title in 2013 with a score of 15-under. The team title is the fifth for the Ragin' Cajuns under head coach Theo Sliman.
Tolson Claims Individual Title
Jack Tolson posted the best 54-hole score in program history to claim the individual tournament title with an overall score of 15-under par (201). Tolson carded his third consecutive round in the 60s on Tuesday with a 68 (-4) to edge out Texas State's Logan Davis by four strokes.
The Lafayette, La., native registered six birdies in the final round to finish the tournament with 19 in three rounds. Tolson has two top 10 finishes this season and three top 25 performances.
Tolson's win is the first for a Cajuns golfer since Harladur Magnus won the Border Olympics in 2016.
Gudjonsson Finishes Third
Freshman Bjorn Gudjonsson recorded his first career top 10 finish after carding a career-best 68 (-4) in the final round to finish in third place with a three-round score of 8-under (208). Gudjonsson tallied six birdies in the final round to post back-to-back rounds in the 60s.
Hinnant Notches First Career Top 25
Freshman Peter Hinnant notched his first career top 25 finish on Tuesday finishing in 20th place with an overall score of 2-over par (218). Hinnant played his last 16 holes of the day even including two birdies to post a 73 (+1) in the final round.
Sliman's Thoughts
"I'm extremely proud of this group. Victories in team golf do not come very often and I want the team to enjoy this one. This is young and inexperienced group that has shown a lot of doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Our good golf has been really good, and our bad golf has been really bad. I'm hoping this is a wakeup call for this team as we are coming to the end of the season.
"The focus of this year has been to improve our bad golf. The definition of great is the difference between your worst and your best. We have seen both sides of that this past month with last week's last place finish and this week's first place finish.
"What I am most proud of is the determination and competitiveness the team showed this week. Nothing changed physically from last week's team to this week. The hope is the boys learned a valuable lesson with that.
"All I can say about Jack is Wow' He has been working his tail off this spring and he's working on the right things as his final round scoring average is well under par. He's been struggling getting out of the gates. His focus and determination has been to get off to a better start and it all came together this week as he played a brilliant 54 holes of golf and is becoming a leader on this team.
"Extremely impressed and proud but not surprised by the performance of Bjorn. He backed up a career best 69 with a 68 today and showed the kind of talent that he possesses. The hope for him early in his career as a freshman is to expect this on a regular basis."
Team And Indy Title
The Cajuns claimed both the team and individual title for the first time since the 2009 season when Kyle Pritchard guided the team to the title at the Red Wolf Classic.
Up Next
The Ragin' Cajuns continue the spring slate on March 31 at the Southern Collegiate Match Play hosted by Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Following the Southern Collegiate Match Play, Louisiana wraps up the regular season with the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship from April 16-17 at the Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Miss.
