REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS GAME: Louisiana opened the 2018-19 regular season with an overtime battle against the Lamar Cardinals, and despite a great effort from the Ragin' Cajuns, Louisiana fell 79-77. In the game sophomore Ty'Reona Doucet recorded her third career double-double finishing with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the game, which were both career-highs. Joining Doucet's great performance, sophomore Skyler Goodwin picked up where she left off following the 2017-18 season, playing for 45 minutes and tying Doucet for the team lead in points finishing with 18 points.Â
Freshman Brandi Williams scored 16 points which was the first time since Sylvana Okde (Nov. 9, 2012) scored 11 points in her debut, that a Louisiana freshman scored in double-figures in their first game at Louisiana.
Â
During the Lamar game, Louisiana shot 50 percent from the field (24-for-48) which was the first time since Louisiana's 2010-11 season opening win against LSU-Shreveport, that the Ragin' Cajuns finished at least 50 percent from the field, having shot 55 percent in the game against the Pilots. Through the game, Louisiana had to storm back from a second quarter deficit of 14 points to get within four points of Lamar at halftime and Louisiana's strong second half forced overtime. It was evident of a young, but hardworking Louisiana squad that did not pack it in, despite Lamar's solid game themselves.
LOUISIANA FRESHMEN SAY HELLO: All-four of Louisiana's true freshmen got the first action of their respective career's against Lamar, with Williams (36 minutes, 16 points); Andrea Cournoyer (35 minutes, 9 points); Jazmyn Womack (25 minutes; 4 points) and Diamond Morrison (15 minutes, one assist) all getting into the game. Â Williams and Cournoyer were a part of the starting five for each of their first career starts.
MCNEESE STATE CONNECTIONS: McNeese State head coach Kacie Cryer and Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead, know each other extremely well. Brodhead coached Cryer at Tuerlings Catholic High School, and in 2002 Brodhead coached Cryer and her teammates to the Louisiana State Championship. Brodhead is 2-0 all-time against Cryer and Louisiana won the previous matchup between the two schools last season when Louisiana took down McNeese State in a triple-overtime marathon 98-86 on Dec. 3, 2017. The connections for Brodhead and Cryer continue, because when Brodhead was at McNeese State as an assistant coach (2007-12), Cryer was a graduate assistant at McNeese State.
WHAT THE COWGIRLS BRING: McNeese State opened up its season at Grambling, on Friday, Nov. 9, dropping the game 75-51. In the game McNeese State shot 30 percent from the field, but did out-rebound Grambling, 47-38. What did in the Cowgirls was that Grambling shot 53 percent from the field during the game, 57 percent in the second half. Freshman forward Divine Tanks led the Cowgirls, finishing with a double-double, grabbing 19 rebounds and scoring 13 points. While redshirt freshman guard Callie Maddox came off the bench to lead McNeese State in scoring, finishing with 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting, which including a perfect 3-for-3 night from beyond the arc.
Entering the season McNeese State was picked to finish eighth in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll, after a season where they finished right in that spot, going 12-18 (8-10 SLC) in 2017-18.
