@RaginCajunsWBB Takes Down LSU-Shreveport, 89-57, In Exhibition Game

11/1/2018 9:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball

LAFAYETTE – Powered by five scoring in double-digits, led by freshman Andrea Cournoyer's 16 points and sophomore Ty'Reona Doucet's 14 points and eight rebounds, Louisiana Women's Basketball took down the LSU-Shreveport Pilots, 89-57, in an exhibition game at the Cajundome on Thursday night.

Sophomore Skyler Goodwin finished with 14 points, while freshmen Brandi Williams dropped 15 points and Jazmyn Womack scored 10 points to help Louisiana finish with multiple scorers in double-digit.  The Ragin' Cajuns finished shooting 50 percent from the field, and had 14 assists, while they held the Pilots to 33 percent shooting and caused 21 LSUS turnovers on the way to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): Louisiana controlled the first quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field, while forcing eight turnovers from the Pilots.  During the quarter, the Ragin' Cajuns were spurred on by eight points from Goodwin and seven points from Doucet, who shot a perfect three-for-three from the field during the period.

The Cajuns took a 21-7 lead into the second quarter thanks to a big 9-2 run in the middle of the quarter and a pair of back-to-back three-point baskets from Goodwin and Morrison that pushed Louisiana's lead over 20 points.

An 11-0 run through the heart of second quarter, powered by three-point baskets from Cournoyer, Williams and Goodwin, Louisiana hit the 40-point mark in the game with 2:30 to go in the half.  Louisiana's defense kept the pressure on, forcing 13 LSUS turnovers through the first half and the Cajuns held the Pilots to 30 percent shooting for the half.

Fittingly the Cajuns ended the half with a steal and fast break basket from Cournoyer, who nailed a layup as the half expired and it gave Louisiana a 47-24 lead heading into the break. HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): Doucet started the second half with a big block, and Louisiana was off and running in the third quarter.  Both teams traded baskets, with a pair of three-point baskets, early in the third, from LSUS cutting Louisiana's lead to 23 points.  But that would be the closest that the Pilots would get to the Cajuns as Louisiana finished the third quarter on an 11-6 run, with Williams hitting three free throws after getting fouled with 1:46 to go in the game.

The late run gave Louisiana a 28-point lead, 69-41, heading into the final period.

Louisiana began the fourth quarter going on a 7-0 run during the first few minutes, as Cournoyer got hot, hitting a three-point basket to spark the run at 7:38.  In the final 10 minutes of the game, Cournoyer scored eight points, two three-point baskets and one layup, to help put a stamp on Louisiana's 89-57 win in its final tune up before opening the 2018-19 regular season.

GAME NOTES: Freshman Diamond Morrison a team-high six assists adding nine points; Womack added eight rebounds of her own in the game; Cournoyer had three steals in the game; The Cajuns shot 46 percent from three-point range; Louisiana shot 50 percent from the field, while holding LSUS to 33 percent shooting
