HOUSTON – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team had its three-match win streak snapped following a narrow loss to Rice on Friday morning in the Rice Adidas Invitational at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The host-Owls (5-3) were able to outlast the Ragin' Cajuns (4-4) in straight sets (27-25, 25-23, 25-22) in a match where just seven points separated the two squads.
Rice capitalized on a 53-30 advantage in kills, posting at least 17 each set. Louisiana used its defense to stay within striking distance, forcing the hosts into 24 attack errors.
Libero Sydney Davis (Jr., LB, Baton Rouge, La.) reached a personal milestone when she collected her 1,000th career dig during the second set.

Louisiana concludes play in the Rice Adidas Invitational on Saturday facing Cal at 11 a.m. and Mississippi State at 7:30 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse on the campus of Rice University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a seesaw affair during the first set that featured 13 ties and eight lead changes, it appeared Louisiana would grab control after a late momentum swing. Trailing 22-20, the Ragin' Cajuns used a block thrown up by Wisnoskie and Dree'Ana Abram, an ace and a Rice attack error to take a 23-22 lead.
Louisiana was on the verge of set point after a Wisnoskie kill made it 24-23, but a service error gave the Owls new life. After trading points, the hosts captured the set with back-to-back kills.
- Both teams swapped scoring sprees to start the second set as Louisiana stormed out to a 5-1 lead and Rice rallied to grab an 8-7 lead.
Fueled by four kills and a pair of Antoine aces, the Ragin' Cajuns broke free from a 9-all tie, jumped ahead 18-10 and appeared to be on the way to evening the match. However, the Owls closed out with a 15-5 run that turned the tables on the Ragin' Cajuns.
- It was a similar script in the third set, but this time it was Louisiana with a late rally. After Rice recovered from a 9-5 deficit, the Ragin' Cajuns found themselves trailing 21-16.
A Reilly kill ignited a 6-0 run – which saw the Cajuns force the Owls into four attack errors – to put the visitors ahead 22-21. Rice managed to sneak out a victory again, beginning a string of four unanswered points with a kill by Seyvion Waggoner.
QUICK HITS
- With no remaining matches on Friday, the Ragin' Cajuns will spend their afternoon assisting at a Hurricane Harvey shelter within the Houston city limits.
- Louisiana averaged over 16 digs per set for the seventh time in eight matches. The squad leads the Sun Belt Conference with a season average of 17.29 digs per set.
- Sydney Davis becomes the fifth Ragin' Cajun to reach 1,000 digs in the rally scoring era (2001-present). She joins former liberos Lindsay Brown (1,863), Caitlyn Auxilien (1,784) and Erika Castro (1,589), plus former setter Andrea Hole (1,119) in reaching the mark.
- Stacey Reilly keeps inching closer to 1,000 career digs. The Houston native posted eight on Friday morning to increase her career tally to 978. She's poised to become the first outside hitter in the rally scoring era to accomplish the feat.
- By eclipsing 20 points in each set, Louisiana has now scored 20-plus points in all but three of the 28 sets contested this season. The Ragin' Cajuns hold a 647-635 edge over the opposition in points.
