Cruz Valle Captures Third Place Finish At Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate

MOBILE, Ala. – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns senior golfer Fernando Cruz Valle carded a final round score of 1-over par (73) on a wet Tuesday to finish in a tie for third place with a 54-hole score of 3-under (213) at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate hosted at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

"I'm very pleased and proud to see Fernando come out in the first tournament of the spring in his senior campaign and post a good result," head coach Theo Sliman said. "It was great to see him come out of the gates with a good round, but I think he really learned a lot in the second and third rounds. It's not easy to play with a lead. He really had to battle some tough conditions today, and it would have been easy for him to fall down the leaderboard, but he persevered and is going to take home a good experience to draw on for the rest of the spring. I expect for him to carry this momentum over and put himself in the same position the rest of the season."

Cruz Valle got off to a tough start with two bogeys in his first nine holes but then bounced back with a pair of birdies in his final nine holes to record his sixth career top 5 finish and first since Sept. 15, 2015 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.

Georgia State's Alexander Herrmann and Chattanooga's Wes Gosselin shared the individual tournament title with a three-round score of 6-under (210).

Louisiana moved up one spot in the final round to end the two-day event in 11th place with a score of 23-over (887).

"This is a disappointing result for our first event of the spring," Sliman said. "We are better than this, and we expect more from ourselves. Hopefully we are coming home with a lot of motivation from this tournament. We have a great opportunity in less than a week when we host some of the best teams in the nation at our home event."

Louisville overcame host South Alabama in the final round to win the event with a score of 8-under (856). The Jaguars (859, -5), Mississippi State (-2, 862), Chattanooga (-2, 862) and Georgia State (E, 864) rounded out the top 5 finishers.

Freshman Aron Juliusson moved up 12 spots in the final round to finish in a tie for 44th with a 54-hole score of 8-over (224). Thomas Strandemo placed in a tie for 56th at 12-over (228), while Ryan Desormeaux ended the day one stroke back in 61st. Ragnar Gardarsson rounded out the scoring in 65th place with a score of 15-over (231).

In the USA Individual Tournament, sophomore Triston Elston finished in a tie for ninth at 9-over (222).

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action Feb. 27-28 as the program hosts the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club. Admission to the event is free.
