ARLINGTON, Texas – A two-run home run from Kacey Everett gave UT Arlington the lead in the third inning and Samantha Clakley made the lead stand as the Mavericks snapped the No. 5-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team's 16-game win streak with a 3-1 win in the Sun Belt series finale on Sunday at Allan Saxe Field.
Clakley scattered six hits and struck out seven in the complete game victory for the Mavericks (22-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) who bounced back from a 13-0, 16-0 doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Kylee Jo Trahan fell to 9-2 with the loss. She was charged with all three UTA runs in her four innings of work. Alex Stewart pitched two innings of relief and kept the Cajuns (22-2, 4-1 Sun Belt) deficit at two runs.
Kassidy Zeringue led the Ragin' Cajuns with two hits (2-for-3). Shellie Landry collected the team's RBI on a ground out in the third inning that forged a 1-1 tie.
UTA's Sandra Mendoza posted a game-high three hits (3-for-3). Everett finished 2-for-3 with two RBI coming on her game-winning hit.
No. 5 Louisiana continues the current eight-game road trip that began this weekend in Arlington by traveling to Troy for a Sun Belt series with the Trojans set for Friday-Saturday, March 25-26.
A leadoff single by Mendoza, a sacrifice bunt by Laura Curry, passed ball and sacrifice fly by Britnea Barilli resulted in the Mavericks grabbing a 1-0 lead in their first at bat.
After Trahan erased a leadoff single in the second inning by retiring three straight UTA hitters, Louisiana drew even in the next at bat. Kara Gremillion led off with a walk, stole second base and later scored on a RBI ground out by Landry.
The Mavericks responded and reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Everett belted a two-out, two-run home run to left center to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns missed a scoring opportunity in the fourth inning after a leadoff single by Kelsey Vincent and double from Aleah Craighton. On Craighton's double pinch runner Meagan Thomas was caught in a rundown between home and third base, then Clakley struck out DJ Sanders and Sara Corbello to close the frame.
Clakley continued to hold the Ragin' Cajuns in check, working around a one-out, bunt single by Zeringue in the fifth inning and retiring 3-4-5 in the lineup (Lexie Elkins, Vincent, Craighton) in order in the sixth inning.
The Cajuns created traffic in the seventh inning as pinch hitter Taylor Terrio was hit by a pitch, Gremillion later singled and runners moved to second and third base on a Zeringue bunt. With the tying run at second base, Clakley induced a ground out from Haley Hayden for the game's final out
