LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team battled windy conditions at the par-72, 6,898-yard Oakbourne Country Club on Tuesday to finish the 31st Louisiana Classics in eighth place with a three-round score of 22-over par (886).
Â
"Certainly not the result I expected from our guys at home," head coach Theo Sliman said. "I know this group is better than this, and at some point we have to get things turned around this spring.
Â
"I want to thank everyone who helped make this such a great event. It was great to see things come down to the wire, and I thank the teams that came this year. Again, we had another great field and the weather couldn't have been better."
Â
Both the team and individual titles came down to the final putt of the day as No. 1 Illinois claimed the team title for the fourth straight season edging out No. 45 Kansas by one stroke with a 54-hole score of 15-under (849). No. 33 Texas A&M (-11, 853), Southeastern Louisiana (+11, 875) and UTSA (+13, 877) rounded out the top 5 teams.
Â
Ben Welle of Kansas used a round of 2-under (70) to claim top honors with a three-round score of 7-under (209).
Â
Cajuns Haraldur Magnus and Fernando Cruz Valle added to their number of top 25 finishes this season as Magnus placed in a tie for 17th at 2-over (218), while Cruz Valle finished one stroke back in a tie for 19th. The pair now have posted top 25 performances in seven of the eight tournaments this year.
Â
Junior Ragnar Gardarsson ended the tournament in a tie for 39th at 7-over (223). Andres Navarrete finished in a tie for 51st at 11-over (227) to cap the scoring.
Â
Louisiana returns to action next week with the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas on March 10-11.
