Cajuns are 4-1 to start season for first time since 2010
LAFAYETTE -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team won a convincing 6-1 match in their 2016 home opener against Jackson State at the Cajun Courts on Sunday morning.
With the win, the Cajuns improve to 4-1 to start the season for the first time since 2010.
"Our goal was to start off with good energy and intensity, and that's exactly what we did starting off with doubles," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "Every day that we compete has given us a little more experience and this weekend gives us more confidence for what we have ahead of us."
Louisiana swept the doubles matches over the Lady Tigers. UL's duo of senior Melissa Burckhartt and sophomore Kelly Drew took No. 1 doubles over Bright Phakamad and Ana Zviahintseva, 6-1.
No. 2 doubles belonged to Cajuns junior Alexandra Way and sophomore Abby Johnson. They defeated Jackson State's Karina Ono and Rebekah Adewumi, 6-2.
Five of the six singles matches were claimed by Louisiana in straight sets. Burckhartt took No. 3 singles over Zviahintseva, 6-0, 6-1. Drew defeated Daria Butorina, 6-0, 6-2, while Way eliminated Ono, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
