Wallace Shines in Cajuns 2015 Season Opening Win

2/6/2015 8:52:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE - Jordan Wallace struck out 13 and surrendered just two hits and Kelsey Vincent's three-run home run in the third inning allowed No. 9 Louisiana to pull away from NC State in a 6-0 victory in the 2015 season opener Friday afternoon at Lamson Park.

Vincent's homer boosted the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) lead to 5-0 in the third inning, capping off a four-run frame. Wallace bore down as the innings progressed, collecting nine of her 13 strikeouts over the final four innings.

"Our fans got to see what we've been talking about and got a little taste of the personality and the athleticism of this team," head coach Michael Lotief said. "Hopefully this is the just beginning of great things to come."

Louisiana continues play in the 2015 Louisiana Classics on Saturday facing Central Arkansas at 12:30 p.m., and Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m.

Lexie Elkins and Haley Hayden each posted two hits and Samantha Walsh added two RBI. Hayden's final hit was a solo home run that capped off the scoring in the sixth inning.

Wallace's complete game shutout landed Louisiana its 14th straight season opening victory and was her 17th career shutout.

"I am so happy and proud of Jordan," Lotief remarked. "It's been a long road back and I think this is the start of a good season for her. What was most impressive about her performance today is that she self-corrected."

Hayden crossed the plate on a fielder's choice grounder by Walsh in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. A stellar defensive play from Hayden in the bottom of the inning prevented a Wolfpack run from scoring.

A Shellie Landry walk and Elkins single set the stage for the pivotal third inning. Walsh followed with an infield single that scored Landry for a 2-0 lead. The Cajuns kept attacking as Vincent's three-run blast, the fourth straight hit in the inning, put distance between the two squads.

Wallace held NCSU (0-1) hitless through 4 1/3 innings. After the Wolfpack's first hit, the Cajuns senior hurler fanned back-to-back hitters to close out the fifth inning.

Hayden's home run in the sixth produced the final margin and Wallace struck out two in each of the final two frames to punctuate a solid season debut.

Emily Weiman suffered the loss for NCSU, allowing six runs off eight hits in six innings of work.

Friday's contest marked the first meeting between the two programs at Lamson Park and first since a pair of contests at the 2006 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

DIAMOND NOTES: Louisiana kicked off the 35th season in program history...The Cajuns improved to 32-3 all-time in season openers and have now been successful each of the past 14 seasons...Haley Hayden, last season's center fielder, made her debut at second base...Shellie Landry, who spent 2014 in right field, returned to left field which is where she played her freshman season (2013)...Head coach Michael Lotief is now three wins shy of 600 career victories (597-147-1)...Freshmen Aleah Craighton (right field), Kelli Martinez (left field) and DJ Sanders (shortstop) each made their collegiate debut.
