Cajuns and Jaguars to Rematch for Conference Championship

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team rebounded after a 4-2 loss in eight innings earlier in the day on Friday to South Alabama, to defeat ULM, 14-6, and advance to the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championship game, and a winner-take-all rematch with the Jaguars.
With the game two win, the Ragin' Cajuns set their date for a rematch with South Alabama for the Sun Belt Conference Championship, Saturday at 3 p.m. The Cajuns and Jaguars are now tied 2-2 in the season series, with the Cajuns winning the regular season series 2-1.
Game One: South Alabama 4, Louisiana 2
Christina Hamilton (23-2) squared off against Hannah Campbell (17-5) in a pitcher's duel between two first-team all-Sun Belt selections, each tossing complete games. Hamilton allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out three and suffered her first loss since February 22nd in an 8-5 loss to South Florida in Clearwater, Fla.
The Cajuns found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning, after Shelbi Redfearn came around to score on a passed ball. Redfearn led the inning off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and third on a single by Corin Voinché, coming in during a Natalie Fernandez at-bat, making it 1-0, Cajuns.
Down to their last three outs, the Jaguars wouldn't give up, taking a late lead off of a two-run home run from Amanda Minahan with one out in the seventh and a runner on second. Cajuns outfielder Kassidy Zeringue had the ball knocked out of her glove by the top of the fence and over, giving the Jaguars a 2-1 lead.
The Cajuns wouldn't lay down in the seventh. Three-straight singles from Haley Hayden, Lexie Elkins and Samantha Walsh tied the game at two, before the Cajuns loaded the bases with nobody out, but Campbell coaxed three-straight bases-loaded pop-ups, to keep the game tied.
The roller coaster continued in extra innings. Emily Messer led the eighth off with a single off the third-base bag and was sacrificed to second. One out later, Blair Johnson gave the Jaguars a 4-2 lead when she launched a two-run home run to right-center field.
The Cajuns faced the same scenario as they did in last night's seventh inning, with Voinché, Fernandez and Hayden due up in the bottom of the eighth. In almost an exact script, Hayden came up with two outs and laced a single, but it was nothing-doing for the Cajuns after that, as USA would get the out to advance to the championship game.
Game Two: Louisiana 14, ULM 6
After loading the bases in the first two innings, the Cajuns found the scoreboard in the second, with a bases-loaded walk to Hayden and a sacrifice fly from Elkins for a 2-0 lead.
The Warhawks responded immediately with a five-run second inning on five hits. ULM tied the game with RBI singles by Amye Barre and Courtney Dutreix, and took the lead with a three-run homer from Miyuki Navarette, to lead 5-2.
The Cajuns started what would be a comeback and then some. Sara Corbello made the score 5-3 with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, scoring Redfearn, and giving the Cajuns the first of what would be 12 unanswered runs.
Elkins tied the game in the top of the fourth, with her 18th home run of the season, sending the ball over the left field bleachers on a line drive, scoring Hayden and knotting the score at five.
After a pair of scoreless innings in the fifth, Samantha Walsh gave the Cajuns a four-run lead with one swing of the bat, for the Cajuns' second grand slam in as many days, to make it 9-5.
The scoring didn't stop at 9-5. Voinché brought in a run on an infield single to make it 10-5, and was immediately followed by a bases-loaded triple by Natalie Fernandez, who then scored on a groundout by Hayden, making it 14-5.
For Fernandez, it was her second career triple and first career three-RBI game.
The Warhawks didn't quit in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on one hit, to close the gap to 14-6.
