LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team won 10-0 and 6-3 in a doubleheader sweep of Middle Tennessee on Saturday, April 13 at Lamson Park. The Cajuns improved their record to 29-11 overall and 11-4 in Sun Belt Conference action. They have now won their last 11 games, dating back to March 17 against South Alabama, and have outscored their opponents 67-7 in the last seven games.
“I liked the way we batted in the first game.” Head Coach Michael Lotief said after the sweep. “We came out from start to finish and played good softball. In the second game we got behind and faced adversity, and they showed they could fight in that situation. It takes character and heart when you're down like that.”
Matte Haack had a great day at the plate, combining to go 4-for-7 with five RBI and two runs scored and a home run. Fellow senior, Brianna Cherry went 4-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored.
“We're getting contribution from more players. They are playing at a high level and executing when they need to. You can't choose when your best player is up like other sports. You don't know what circumstances will call on what kid, and you have to be ready through the lineup, and we have been.”
The Cajuns got on the scoreboard early and often, scoring five runs in the first inning and at least one in every inning they batted before the mercy rule came into effect for game one.
Haack opened the scoring with an RBI double to left center, driving in Brianna Cherry. Samantha Walsh added to the score, reaching on an error that scored Haack and Shellie Landry. Sara Corbello made it 5-0 with her fourth home run of the season, to right field, scoring Walsh.
Haack added to the score again in the second with a solo-home run to make it 3-0.
Louisiana picked up three more runs in the third inning, all with two outs. Nerissa Myers hit her fifth home run of the season, and fourth since April 6, to make it 8-0. Brianna Cherry made it back-to-back home runs to make it 9-0. It was her eighth home run of the season, and first home run since March 1, against Texas A&M.
The Cajuns added one more run in the fourth on a Fernandez single, scoring Leandra Maly after an error by the first baseman.
Jordan Wallace started game one, tossing 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and fanning seven batters. Christina Hamilton came on in relief, throwing the last two innings, also allowing one hit, and striking out two. The Cajuns did not issue a walk at all in game one.
The Cajuns started game two with another first inning run, and have now scored in the first inning 24 times, going 19-5 when they do so. This game it was Brianna Cherry hitting a home run, her ninth of the season, to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders got on the board for the first time in the day with a three-run third inning, taking a 3-1 lead. It was the first time the Cajuns have trailed in a game since the second inning of game two against Florida International on March 29th.
“I think we stayed confident.” Senior infielder Matte Haack said about trailing in the game. “This team has been through adversity together and we have a good lineup, one through nine. No matter who is up to bat we have a shot. Somebody is going to get a big hit when we need it.”
The Cajuns responded in the fifth inning, taking the lead back and sweeping the doubleheader. Leandra Maly led the inning off with a bunt single and was advanced to second on a four-pitch walk to Natalie Fernandez. Two batters later Brianna Cherry loaded the bases, also with a four-pitch walk.
Two batters after that, Matte Haack came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Haack sent a pitch to deep right field, over the right fielders head, for a bases clearing double.
“It had to be a good pitch.” Haack said of her clutch at-bat. “With the bases loaded, a walk is an RBI. I wanted to stay inside the ball and try and get good contact. The ball fell our way with runners on.”
Louisiana added two more runs for insurance in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Cherry and a bases loaded walk by Draheim.
Victoria Brown got the start in game two and left after three innings, getting the no-decision. Her final line was 3.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs on six hits and two strikeouts. She yielded to Jordan Wallace in the fourth inning.
Wallace tossed the final four innings, picking up the win and improving to 18-6 on the season. It was the first time this season that she picked up a win out of relief. She tossed 4.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out eight. On the day she threw 7.0 shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk, while striking out 15 batters.
She has not allowed a run in her past 26 innings pitched, accumulating 52 strikeouts in that time. She has now fanned 208 batters in 139.1 innings this season, with a 1.96 ERA.
“[Wallace] is having fun.” Coach Lotief said of Wallace's current streak. “It takes a lot of pressure of our defense and our offense. She has continued to work hard and she can still be better. Now that she is starting to command her pitches and show consistency it is a great thing.”
The Cajuns and Blue Raiders are back on the field tomorrow afternoon for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Lamson Park. The Cajuns will be back at Lamson Park on Wednesday, April 17 when Houston comes to town for a nonconference doubleheader at 4:00 P.M.
