LAFAYETTE - The Ragin' Cajuns softball team opened conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader split with Western Kentucky. They snapped their three-game losing streak in game one with a 10-0 decision over the Lady Toppers, and dropped game two by a score of 12-2 at Lamson Park to see their record move to 16-8 on the season.
The Cajuns owned all of the offense in game one, scoring two in the second and eight in the fourth inning to go on to the 8-run mercy rule victory. They spread the runs around the lineup, with seven different batters driving in a run. Freshman Linzey Cifreo was the lone Cajun with a multi-RBI game, with her pinch hit two-run double in the fourth. Sophomore Samantha Walsh went 1-for-1 in the game with two walks and scored a career-high three runs.
Louisiana's offense was on full attack, but it was the pitching that solidified a win in game one. Wallace tossed her second shutout of the season, striking out nine batters and allowing just one runner on base, by way of a hit in the second inning. The nine strikeouts were the third highest for her this season and most in an outing with five innings or less.
The Cajuns picked up their 16th win of the season and ninth by way of the mercy rule.
Western Kentucky brought the bats in game two, scoring two in the first and two in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Cajuns lessened the gap in the bottom of the third with two of their own runs. The first run came off of a Sara Corbello single, and Sarah Draheim crossed the plate after the left fielder misplayed the ball. Just two batters later, Leandra Maly drove in her fifth run of the season with an RBI fielder's choice.
WKU did not take long to take those back, with a five-run fourth inning, capped off by a three-run home run by Amanda Thomas. They wouldn't stop there and they went on to add three more in the top of the seventh.
Sarah Draheim gave the Cajuns some life in the seventh inning with a two-out triple off the left field wall, but that would be all the Cajuns could muster up, and they went on to fall 12-2. Draheim went hitless in game one, snapping a team-high 12-game hitting streak.
Louisiana used a trio of pitchers in the second game. Kristin Martinez made her fourth start of the season and was handed her third loss, falling to 2-3. She tossed just 0.2 innings, and allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one batter.
Christina Hamilton picked up 2.1 innings of relief work and allowed five runs on two hits and two walks. She struck out three batters, the second highest for her this season. Victoria Brown got the most work of the pitching staff, tossing the final four innings and allowed five runs on four hits, while walking and striking out one.
The Cajuns will look to rebound from the conference loss tomorrow, in the finale of the three game set with WKU. The first pitch is slated for noon at Lamson Park. They will then stay at home and take on Louisiana Tech in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 13 at 4:00 P.M.
