Lafayette, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns softball program took the short trip west on I-10, Wednesday, February 20 to take on McNeese State University, and improved their season record to 8-1 with a 5-1 victory.  The Cajuns have won their last seven games, and starting pitcher Jordan Wallace improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Cajuns spent no time getting on the board, striking with 4 runs in the first inning.  Senior Brianna Cherry started the scoring with a home run to deep center field.  Three batters later, Shellie Landry hit her third home run of the season, this one a three-run homer to left field.

“I thought we came out aggressive.”  Head coach Megan Granger said after the game.  “A lot of the girls were tough tonight and going after it every pitch.  Everyone has a good mindset at the plate.  Being aggressive is always our game plan and we executed it in the first inning.”

The Landry home run would end the day for the McNeese starter and bring in Jamie Allred, one of the Cowgirls' top two pitchers, statically.  Allred would get out of the inning and find a groove, finishing the game in the circle.

The Cowgirls would respond in their half of the first after back-to-back hits to start the game and back-to-back batters hit by the pitch.  Starting pitcher Jordan Wallace would dial in after the run crossed the plate, retiring the next 10 batters, 5 by the strikeout.
The Cajuns added their first run of the game off Allred, in the fifth inning.  Brianna Cherry scored her second run of the game.  Cherry singled and advanced to second base on an error before being drove home by a Sarah Draheim single.

Wallace's consecutive batter streak was snapped in the fifth inning when the Cowgirls threatened with runners on the corners and one out.  She would get out of the jam with a strikeout and a good defensive play by Natalie Fernandez.

Wallace tossed the complete game and allowed just four hits and struck out a season-high 13 batters, improving her season stat line to 6-0 with a 0.60 ERA and 55 strikeouts.

The Cajuns will now travel to Clearwater, Florida for the NFCA Leadoff Classic.  They will face two Top-25 teams in #15 Michigan and #14/17 South Florida on Friday.  The first pitch against Michigan is slated for noon, and the first pitch against South Florida will be at 5:00 P.M.  The Cajuns will take on unranked Illinois State, Hofstra and James Madison on Saturday and Sunday.

“Seeing tough competition will expose us a little bit.  Hopefully we can maintain our composure, stay free and lose and play Ragin' Cajun Softball.”
