Lafayette, La. -
The Cajuns used four runs in the first and six runs in the second to run away with the first game of the 27th Annual Louisiana Classics, winning 13-2 over Mississippi Valley State.  The Cajuns plated their first four runs before recording their first hit, which wouldn't come until the second inning.

Senior Brianna Cherry got the first hit for the Cajuns, a solo home run to jump-start a six run second inning.  The homer was the first of the season for Cherry and the 11th of the career.  She finished the day with two RBI.

Nerissa Myers continued her high-pace scoring on the season, crossing the plate twice, for the fourth time this season.  Myers set a new school mark in runs scored in 2011 (77), only to break it in 2013 when she scored 83 times.  She has scored nine runs in five games this season.

Louisiana took advantage of shaky pitching, taking first base 14 times on either walks or being hit by the pitch, and advanced runners three times by way of an illegal pitch.

The Cajun's didn't take long to start emptying the bench.  Head Coach Megan Granger would make many changes to the lineup card, with 21 players seeing time in the field or at the plate.  One of those was senior Megan Waterman.  Waterman, mostly used as a defensive replacement and pinch runner in her first three seasons, doubled off the top of the center field wall for her first career hit.  Though not credited with an RBI, a run would score on the play after a throwing error at third base brought Myers around.

“A lot of people got different opportunities to play today.” Granger said after the win.  “When we're ahead in the game we're going to give a lot of the younger players some opportunities to see what they have.”

Four separate Cajuns had a two-RBI game today, Myers, Cherry, Landry and Corbello.  Myers, however, would be the only Cajun with multiple hits, spreading the 10 hits out including Meagan Thomas and Kelsey Vincent's first career hit, along with Waterman.

It would be pitcher by committee for the Cajuns, with sophomore Christina Hamilton getting the start, followed by Victoria Brown and Kristin Martinez.  Hamilton tossed 2.0 shutout-innings, while allowing one hit and a walk and striking out one.  Brown tossed the next two innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and a walk.  Martinez struck out the side in the fifth, to close out the game for the Cajuns.

“I thought our pitchers hit their spots and got a lot of movement on the ball.” Granger said.  “We want to keep seeing people playing hard, coming prepared and executing our plans.

The team will have a quick turnaround and be back on the diamond tomorrow at 1:30 PM when they take on Texas State for game two of the Classic.  They will follow that with game two against Mississippi Valley State tomorrow at 3:30 PM, before taking Texas State on Sunday at 1:30 PM for the finale of the tournament.
