LAFAYETTE, La. – The No. 5/6 Ragin' Cajuns softball team ended the regular season on a high note, with an 11-4 victory over ULM on Senior Day at Lamson Park.
Louisiana (46-3, 21-3), having clinched the Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Title for the 11th time in 12 years, will be the number one seed in the SBC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 9.
Ashley Brignac (20-2) recorded seven strikeouts in the contest, passing Kyla Hall for second place on the UL all-time career strikeouts list with 821. The win marked the eighth straight win for the fifth-year senior as she hurled her 17 complete game of the season.
Senior Christi Orgeron was 2-for-4 on the afternoon, drove in three runs and hit her team-leading 20th homerun of the season.
Nerissa Myers scored two runs, placing her just six shy of the school-tying 77 runs she scored a year ago. The Petal, Miss. native also posted two hits and had two RBI in her effort.
Katie Smith, Sarah Draheim and Paige Cormier all recorded two hits to round out the Cajuns leading offensive performers.
“You can't say enough about these seven seniors and what they have done for this program,” co-head coach Michael Lotief said. “They can't reflect on what they have accomplished right now but after the season is over and they have some time to sit down and think, it's incredible what they have done.
Women's College World Series, conference championships, what they have done for the community, they have set a very high standard for the program. Each one is embedded in their own special way and they are such a great group to be around collectively.”
The Warhawks (24-24, 9-15) went up 3-0 in the top of the first on a two out, three-run blast from Roxy Cassel, her second homerun of the season. ULM did all of their damage in the inning, with two outs after Brignac retired the first to hitters she faced.
Myers singled with one out in the bottom of the first as Orgeron came to the dish and launched a 1-1 pitch off the right field foul pole for a two-run blast to cut the La.-Monroe lead to 3-2.
The Ragin' Cajuns captured a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the second, with four runs, on four hits. UL scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error by ULM pitcher, Jessica Chastka, plating Draheim from second. Natalie Fernandez recorded an RBI single to bring Cormier around and Myers laced a two-run single to right field, giving the Cajuns a three-run lead.
In the third inning, Brianna Cherry and Draheim smoked back-to-back doubles to begin the frame as Louisiana tallied another run for a 7-3 lead.
La.-Monroe inched closer in the top of the fifth, when Miyuki Navarrete hit her third long ball of the season, a left field solo shot off Brignac, for a 7-4 contest.
UL added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the first four Cajuns reached base, including an RBI single from Orgeron. Later in the inning, Cherry hit a sacrifice fly to right field, Orgeron scored on a wild pitch and Cormier recorded an RBI single to increase the Louisiana lead to 11-4.
Brignac retired the Warhawks in the seventh without any harm and fanned two batters in the inning to move into second place on the UL all-time career strikeouts.
