LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns football team churned up 294 yards rushing on the way to a 41-13 Homecoming victory over Tulane here Saturday afternoon at Cajun Field.
Louisiana piled up 167 of those rushing yards in the opening half, building a comfortable 24-10 margin at the break. Two unanswered third quarter scores further cemented the decision and allowed the Cajuns to coast in the game's final 15 minutes.
The win allowed the Cajuns to improve to 4-1 on the year and extend its Cajun Field win streak to eight games over the last two seasons, the third longest streak in facility history.
The game was played in front of a Homecoming crowd of 29,785, the eighth-largest crowd in Cajun Field history.
The running back combination of Alonzo Harris and Effrem Reed ripped through the Green Wave defense to the tune of 208 yards (70 percent of team's total).
Harris rushed 23 times for 123 yards and a touchdown, giving him his second 100-yard game of the season and the third of his short UL career. The sophomore running back from Gadsden, Ala., did not lost a single yard the entire contest. In the process, he went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career. In 17 career games, Harris has rushed (237) times for (1,087) yards and 11 touchdowns.
Terrance Broadway made his first start in a Cajuns uniform, but not the first of his career or against the Green Wave. Broadway, who started against Tulane as a true freshman at Houston on Sept. 25, 2010, went 9-of-22 for 150 yards and two TD strikes. He also added a score via a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.
Brett Baer registered double figure points again. The Cajuns kicker connected on field goals from 46 and 31 yards and added five extra points for 11 points total.
Louisiana brought a close to Tulane's four-game win streak in the series and defeated the Green Wave at Cajun Field for the first time. The Cajuns were victorious in their homecoming contest for the second straight season (defeated North Texas 30-10 on Oct. 15, 2011) and improved to 39-26-2 all-time on Homecoming day.
Baer was responsible for the only points of the first quarter, connecting on a 46-yard field goal at the 11:33 mark. It was set up by a 48-yard burst up the middle by Reed on the first play from scrimmage.
The Cajuns pushed the lead to 10-0 when Broadway connected with Javone Lawson on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 12:43 remaining in the second quarter. It was the second touchdown of the year for Lawson and came against double coverage on a corner route that Lawson made a nice over-the-shoulder grab on.
The defense was responsible for the next points as Justin Anderson intercepted a D.J. Ponder pass and returned it 38 yards for the score. Tulane got the touchdown right back when Justyn Shackleford got behind the UL secondary to catch a 71-yard touchdown pass from Ponder to make it 17-7 with 5:18 left before halftime.
Broadway put the next touchdown on the board, running it in from 10 yards out with 1:45 left to push the lead to 24-7. The touchdown, the third rushing score of the year for Broadway, capped an 8-play, 75-yard drive.
Tulane scored just before the half on a 40-yard field goal by Cairo Santos with nine seconds left. The score was set up by a Sam Scofield interception of a Broadway pass, the first of the year by a UL quarterback.
Broadway and Lawson connected on their second touchdown play of the game to open the second half as Lawson fought off a Tulane defender to make a 20-yard scoring grab. The touchdown gave Lawson his second multiple touchdown game of his career, which capped a 75-yard UL drive.
After the Cajuns forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, the Cajuns marched from their own 46-yard line to a score that vaulted the lead to 28 points. On the eight-play scoring drive, Broadway found Reed for a 22-yard pickup into Green Wave territory, then Harris hauled the ball six times with the final tote being a one-yard plunge into the end zone at 4:44 of the third quarter
The teams swapped field goals in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
The game marked the only time in the month of October that UL will play on a Saturday. After today, the Cajuns travel to North Texas for a Tuesday (Oct. 16) game that will be televised on ESPN2. UL then returns home the following Tuesday (Oct. 23) for a 7:00 p.m. game against Arkansas State that will also be broadcast on ESPN2.
