After reaching the Sun Belt Championship finals for the first time in 13 years, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team's season came to a close after a 4-0 loss to No. 63 FIU on Sunday in Mobile, Ala.

Under first year head coach Greg Harkins, the Cajuns finish the season with a record of 11-9. It marks the sixth time in the past seven seasons that UL posted a winning record on the courts.

"The girls have achieved tremendous success this season and I'm very proud of them," said Harkins. "It was a good match and the girls battled hard. But we have to give credit to FIU. It was well-played match. The girls appreciate the support from the University and the men's program this past weekend."

As the season draws to a close, senior Julie Mazinova ends her career ranking among the top-three in multiple categories of UL's record book. Her singles record of 71-42 sits second all-time at UL. She ranks third all-time with 59 doubles wins (59-42) and her total tally of 130-84 ranks second in UL history. Her single-season record of 21-9 this season sits eighth all-time, following her 23-9 record set last year, which is tied for the second best win total in the program's history.

"Julie's been a tremendous asset to this program," said Harkins. "She has always fought to the last ball and is someone you cannot replace. We appreciate everything she has brought to UL."

Early in the match, the Cajuns looked like they were about to secure the crucial doubles point by leading on all three courts at one point.

The Cajuns' tandem of Milou Israel and Briggitt Marcovich got the first doubles victory with an 8-5 win over Rita Maisak and Guilietta Boha at the No. 2 position.

But two hard fought matches swung the Panthers' way as they evened the scores on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts.

FIU's duo of Liset Brito and Maria Spenceley battled it out with Mazinova and Audrey Wooland to earn an 8-6 win on the No. 1 court.

Christine Seredni and Lisa Johnson were able to secure the doubles point for the Panthers, after going bacnk-and-forth with Mia Gordon and Sandra Ahlqvist 9-8 at the No. 3 doubles position.

Boha recorded the first singles win for the Panthers at the No. 6 court, winning 6-3, 6-1 over Ahlqvist. Mazinova fell at the No. 1 singles position 6-0, 6-2 to Brito, moving FIU one point away from clinching the victory.

Louisiana held on by forcing a third set at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions but Maisek was able to clinch the final match point by defeating Gordon at the No. 5 court 6-3, 6-4.

"This is a good stepping stone for the program," said Harkins. "We've got this program headed in the right direction."
