UL Cruises Over USA, Advances To Semis

"We played extremely well today," said UL head coach Greg Harkins. "The girls raised it to a whole another level. They girls have gotten into the whole championship atmosphere. It was good match."
The Cajuns jumped ahead quickly by grabbing the doubles point. Mia Gordon and Sandra Ahlqvist defeated South Alabama's Bridgette Gale and Anna Davidson 8-0 at the No. 3 position, followed by Julie Mazinova and Audrey Wooland grabbing a victory on the No. 1 court over Katie Welch and Chane Hines, 8-3.
Ahlqvist put the Cajuns up 2-0 by sweeping Julia Ivanova 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 singles position. Gordon extended UL's lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory on the No. 5 court over Gale.
Milou Israel clinched the match for UL with a victory over Jess Courtnell at the No. 4 position by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
The Cajuns didn't drop a single set in the match.
With the win, UL advances to the semifinals and will face No. 7 Denver. The Pioneers upset No. 2 La.-Monroe on Friday after a nearly six hour match by a score of 4-3. Match time is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The last time the two teams met was during the 2010 Sun Belt Championships. The No. 6 seeded Cajuns knocked off No. 3 seed Denver, 4-3, to advance to the semifinals.
Prior to that UL met Denver in the 2008 SBC Championships. That season, the Pioneers were ranked No. 28 nationally and claimed a 4-1 win over the Cajuns in the quarterfinals.
