UL Narrowly Misses Upset of No. 65 USF

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team narrowly missed an upset of No. 65 University of San Francisco on Monday, as the Dons edged UL, 4-3, at the Cal Club in San Francisco.

Louisiana (1-7) earned the doubles point before USF (5-4) secured four victories in singles competition to earn the victory.

UL's Brandon Farine and Yanick Mandl won a thrilling 9-8 contest over William Schumacher and Germain Bahri in the top doubles slot.

In the number two hole, Oscar Pachon and Robert Voss combined for an 8-6 win over the Dons' tandem of Mark DeCastro and Richard Bucalem to give UL the first point in the match.

San Francisco closed out doubles play with a victory as Ola Bakke and Jacob Hartwig edged the Cajuns' Carlin Murray and Ted Nilsson, 8-7.

USF tied the match at one when Bakke defeated Muarry in the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Louisiana regained the lead as number two spot holder Mandl won in straight sets, disposing of DeCastro, 6-3, 6-3.

San Francisco rallied to win the next three points with Schumaker taking the three-slot over Louisiana's Voss, 6-1, 6-3. Bucalem defeated Nilsson 6-1, 6-3 to give the Dons 3-2 advantage.

Hartwig captured the win for USF with a hotly contested fifth-spot match. The USF player defeated UL's Pachon in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Louisiana did claim another win as Carl Alberton handled Germain Bahri in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Ragin' Cajuns will battle No. 74 Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon in Moraga, Calif., before returning home to a three-match homestand. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. CT at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
