The Ragin' Cajun Pepper
For years, the Ragin' Cajuns were searching for a mascot that represented the University while providing excitement and promoting pride. The end result was a pepper named Cayenne.
The University has received an unbelievable response to its unique nickname and its logos with the recent success in athletics. In the College World Series in 2000, many players and fans were frequently asked, "What is a Ragin' Cajun?" In fact, the Ragin' Cajuns were voted as the best collegiate team nickname by The Sporting News in 1998 and by an ESPN survey in 2006.
A Ragin' Cajun is not a person or an animal, but a feeling that describes our unique way of life. It describes our hot and spicy food and unique music. For this, the students picked a pepper and named it Cayenne.
Cayenne does not replace any characters who represented the University throughout its 100-year history. Cayenne embodies the Ragin' Cajun spirit of Acadiana.
Cayenne is unique. Cayenne is a spirit leader that kids can hug. The University needed a spirit leader that can represent the Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns to a national audience.
