LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team faced
a tough challenge from the Division II Abilene Christian Wildcats Monday but
was able to come away with the 6-1 victory. Louisiana was able to win the doubles
point after the scrappy Wildcats, who are ranked #7 in NCAA Division II, gave the Cajuns a scare.
ACU's number one doubles team of Ryan Hudson and Bryan
Joiner showed they could play with anyone pouncing all over the Cajuns' Piotr Banas and Piotr Olechowski early to take a 6-1 lead. With the score at 7-2 the
Wildcats put away the Cajuns after some furious rallies that brought applause
for both teams, from the 90 plus in attendance.
On court three the Cajuns duo of Arlen Domoney and
Bradley Bristow jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead before taking the match 8-3.
The Cajuns also got a tough doubles match on court two. The
Cajuns' tandem of Neil Schnieder and Javier Pulgar trailed 3-2 after five
games. The Cajuns took the next two games to regain control of the lead 4-3.
The Wildcats were able to tie the match at 5-5 after rallying off two straight
games. UL reclaimed the lead in the next game and did not look back winning the
match 8-6.
With the Cajuns winning two out of the three doubles
matches UL took a 1-0 lead going into the singles matches.
The singles portion of the match was not as exciting but
still featured great shots and efforts on both sides.
The Cajuns won five out of the six matches to win 6-1.
Picking up wins for the Cajuns were Banas, Pulgar,
Olechowski, Domoney and Yanick Mandl.
UL will be on the road this upcoming weekend for three
matches in Texas. The Cajuns will play on DePaul, Texas- San Antonio, and Texas
A&M- Corpus Christi.
