Women's Tennis hosts UL Invite

The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team was forced indoors by bad weather on Sunday for the final day of the UL Invitational.

Both Cajun women in the singles finals lost their matches as did their doubles team.

Julie Mazinova fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Doris Kuselj after winning the first set 6-4. However, Kuselj bounced back and won 6-2, 6-2 to take the championship.

In Flight C, Mia Gordon lost her finals match to Andrea Nedorostova of Northwestern State 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the UL team of Mazinova and Marovich fell to NSU's Schulz and Bazhanova in a close match 8-7.

The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team put three girls in singles championship matches and one team in a doubles championship match on day two at the UL Invitational at Ragin' Cajuns Courts on Saturday.

Leading the way for UL was Audrey Wooland, who made it to the finals of her flight before falling to Martina Rubesova of Northwestern State 4-6, 6-4, 5-2. In the semifinals Wooland knocked off Natalie Araya of MTSU 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 (4).

Julie Mazinova was the second Cajun to reach the finals. She is yet to play her finals match against Doris Kuseli. The match will take place on Sunday at 9 a.m. Mazinova defeated Middle Tennessee's Yuiri Nomoto 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Mia Gordon rounded out the Cajuns in the finals by defeating Anna Diananova of MTSU 3-3, 30-15 Wo (inj). Gordon will face Andrea Nedorostova of NSU at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

In doubles action, the team of Marovich and Mazinova beat North Texas' Cruz and Mackenzie 9-8(2). Vasovic, who was teamed with a UNO player, lost to NSU's Dedorostova and Rubesova 8-2.

Action resumes on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team got off to a hot start at the UL Invitational at Cajun Courts on Friday, winning 10 singles matches and three doubles matches.

Advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective brackets were Briggitt Marovich, who defeated A. Curukovic of Northwestern State 7-6 (5), 6-2 and Mia Hagiu of Southeastern Louisiana 6-4, 6-1; Juli Mazinova, who beat Olga Bazhanova of Northwestern State 6-2, 6-0 and Cicak Mirna of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1, 3-6, 6-0; and Audrey Wooland, who defeated Bianca Shulz of Northwestern State 6-2, 6-0 and T Coffey of Middle Tennessee 6-2, 6-3.

Mia Gordon defeated Ashley Akin of North Texas 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 in Flight C. Also in Flight C was Tara Vasovic who beat Megan Harless of Texas A&M-CC 7-5, 6-4.

Milou Israel knocked off Leanne Mascall of TAMCC 6-0, 6-2, but lost in the next round to Marietta Bigus of Middle Tennessee 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Wooland teamed with Gordon to take out Southeastern's Chelini and Hagiu 8-3. Vasovic teamed with UNO's Howey to beat Southeastern's Hanke and Schmied 8-5. Marcovich and Maziniova beat Discordia and Kuselj 8-3.

Play will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team will host the UL Invitational at Ragin' Cajun courts this Friday-Sunday.

Participating teams include North Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana, Middle Tennessee, UNO and Northwestern State.

UL coach Tina Samara said she expects all of UL's players to participate.

The schedule for the tournament is not set in stone as the weather will affect how many matches are played in a single day.

The Cajuns are coming off a trip to Colorado in which Audrey Wooland made it to the quarterfinals of her bracket. UL won 10 matches in all, including doubles matches.
