Cajuns First After Round 1 at SBC

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's golf team began their Sun Belt Conference title defense on a positive note in the first round of the SBC Championship at The Shoals Golf Course.

The Cajuns posted an opening round team score of 280 to finish the day at eight under par. Louisiana finished the round in first place, four strokes in front of second place Denver and eight strokes ahead of North Texas who finished the day in third place at even par.

New Orleans and South Alabama finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at one and two over par.

Three Ragin' Cajuns players finished the day in the top-10 with a fourth finishing just outside of 10th with an 11th place finish. Four of the five Cajun golfers carded opening round scores below par.

Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) paced the Cajuns in the first round. The junior turned in an opening round score of 69 to finish the day at three under par. His performance garnered Carrey a tie for second place in the initial round.

Carrey finished just two strokes behind Michael McGrady of Troy who shot a first round score of 67 (-5). Johnny Caldwell (South Alabama), Brent Long (Western Kentucky) and Espen Kofstad (Denver) tied with Carrey at three under par in second place.

One shot back of Carrey were Dustin Petit (Luling, La.) and Kyle Pritchard (San Antonio, Texas). The duo each shot a two under par round of 70 to finish the day in a tie for sixth place.

Senior Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.) shot a one under par round of 71 in his fourth and final Sun Belt Conference Championship. Smith, who birdied on a playoff hole in the 2007 SBC Championship to lift UL to victory, shot a sub-par round in the conference tournament for the first time in his collegiate career.

Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns was Morgan Landry (Lafayette, La.). The senior from Lafayette turned in an opening round score of 76 (+40) to finish the day in a tie for 41tst.

Louisiana will continue their title defense tomorrow in round two of the Sun Belt Conference Championship before finishing the tournament on Wednesday.
