Cajun Women Defeat Troy, Fall to Denver

MONROE, La.-No. 4 seed Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team defeated No. 5 seed Troy 4-1 in Round 1 of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships but fell to No. 1 seed Denver 4-1 in Round 2.
Against Troy (10-9), Louisiana (16-6) captured the doubles point despite losing at the No. 1 position. Troy's Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi won at the No. 1 position 8-1 over Kim van der Horst and Briggitt Marcovich.
The Cajuns struck back winning the No. 2 and No. 3 positions with wins by Julie Mazinova and Mia Gordon 8-4 over Mirte De Bakker and Caroline Jounia and Angela Dangond and Myrthe Molenveld 8-4 over Stephanie Vieria and Leonie Guijt.
In singles, van der Horst put UL up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position against Stephanie Vieria.
Troy's Annabelle Bares cut the score to 2-1 with her win at No. 2.
The Cajuns captured the final two singles points when Gordon defeated Carolina Jounia 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 6 court and Marcovich got past Leonie Guijt 6-2, 7-5.
Against Denver, DU (20-2) took the doubles point with wins by Ute Schnoy and Kyla Iwinski at the No. 2 position and Julia Bauregger and Mallory Voelker at the No. 1 spot.
Gordon and Mazinova defeated Annette Aksdel and Bhavani Tirumurti 5-7, unfinished.
In singles action, Van der Horst tied the match for UL (16-7) 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Julia Bauregger at the No. 3 position.
The Pioneers then took the next three singles points as Tirumurti, Voelker, and Aksdal won at Nos. 6, 1 and 2 respectively.
The Cajuns will face No. 2 seed South Alabama in the consolation round, and Denver will play No. 3 seed Florida International in the championship match.
