No. 40 Tulsa Prevails Over Cajuns, 6-1

TULSA, Okla. - Louisiana's women's tennis team battled two singles matches to a third-set tie break, but the 40th-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane won five of the six singles points to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns 6-1 Friday evening at the D. Case Tennis Center. The loss for the Cajuns (6-3) was their second in as many days. On Thursday, Louisiana fell by an identical 6-1 tally to No. 26 Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
Tulsa (10-1) took an early 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. Louisiana's Julie Mazinova and Myrthe Molenveld took Tulsa's Rebecca Row and Carla Zabaleta to a tie break, but the Golden Hurricane's duo pulled out an 8-7 (7-4) win at the No. 1 slot. The Golden Hurricane also won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles points for the 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Hurricane then took the first five singles points, including four in straight sets. Tulsa's Thalia Diaz-Barriga defeated Kim Van Der Horst 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 2, while Row knocked off Angela Dabgond 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Louisiana's Bridget Marcovich was unable to overcome Marta Marcinkowska, falling 6-1, 6-0. Marina Ruiz De Gauna was the fifth Cajuns to suffer defeat in singles as Agostina Santoro won on court No. 5, 6-2, 6-4. Molenveld and Zabaleta battled to a third-set tie break after each won a set by a 6-2 tally. But, Zabaleta was able to hold off Molenveld in the tiebreaker 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2).
Mazinova finally broke Tulsa's shutout in the sixth and final singles game of the match. Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Mazinova defeated Alexandra Kichoutkin 6-2 in the first set, but Kichoutkin evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. The pair battled to a third-set tiebreaker where the Cajuns finally prevailed as Mazinova claimed a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory.
Louisiana will aim to rebound from back-to-back setbacks Saturday when the Ragin' Cajuns remain in Tulsa to battle the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
