RUSTON, La.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's golf team hit the links at the Squire Creek Invitational and finished the first day in a tie for fourth place.  Senior Devin Carrey finished the day in a tie for second place to lead UL.

The Cajuns combined for an opening round team score of 290.  The two over-par round put the Ragin' Cajuns in a good position to make a move in the second round.  In the afternoon round, Louisiana improved six strokes and turned in a four-under par team performance.  Their second round score of 284 put the Cajuns in a two-way tie with Nevada for fourth place.

UL finished the day seven strokes behind tournament-leaders LSU and New Orleans.  Louisville completed the day two-strokes ahead of the Cajuns in third place.

Carrey led all Cajuns with back-to-back rounds below par.  The senior began the day with six birdies, en route to an opening round of 68.  For Carrey, the round tied his season low that he turned in at the Mean Green Classic where he took home medalist honors.

In the afternoon session, Carrey turned in a scorecard of one-under par 71.  Carrey's round was highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole.

Kyle Pritchard shot an opening round of 74, before cutting four-strokes off of his second round for a two-under par 70.  His two under par day put the San Antonio native in a tie for 24th.

Philipp Fendt made the most dramatic jump of the day.  After shooting an opening round of 80, the freshman turned in his first round under-par as a Cajun.  Fendt turned in a three-under par round of 69 to move into a tie for 52nd.

“The internal fortitude of that young man is impressive,” head coach Theo Sliman stated of the freshman.  “To go from one of his worst rounds on the year to his first round in the 60s, that shows what that young man has in his heart to fight back from a round like that to help his team like he did in the second round,”

Fellow freshman Andrew Noto and senior Dustin Petit also finished in a tie for 52nd.  Noto shot a 73 and a 76 to finish the day at five-over par, while Petit carded rounds of 75 and 74.

Sophomore Thomas Petts competed in the event as an individual.  Petts carded back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish the day at four-over par.  His score was good enough for a tie for 47th.

The Ragin' Cajuns golf team will continue play at the Squire Creek Invitational on Tuesday.
