Football: Mid-Week Practice Report

The Cajuns went to work on Sunday night at Cajun Field.  The team practiced for nine periods in shorts, first working on game corrections, then on special teams and finally three periods of scout team drills.

The team worked on Tuesday in full pads for 12 periods.  Wednesday's practice was in the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility, covering 13 periods.  The team will practice on Thursday and walk-through at Cajun Field on Friday afternoon.

Five questions for defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier...

How did practice go this week?

Fouquier:  "We were a little sore on Sunday, but moved around pretty decent.  It was hot on Tuesday, but the guys fought through it.  We had some guys go down with cramping and practice wasn't as good as we wanted, but we came out today and had some very crisp work.”

What happened to the defense in the first five minutes of the game at South Carolina?

Fouquier:  "There's always an acclimation to the speed of the game when you go from practice to the first Saturday of the season.  South Carolina had some great athletes ? guys that could run well.  We missed some easy tackles that may have changed the scenario.”

What's different for the Cajuns this week?

Fouquier:  "Little things.  Hopefully we got the first-game mistakes out of the way and we improved.  The kids understand better and know what they have to do.”

What positives defensively carry over into this week's game?

Fouquier:  "Holding South Carolina to just 14 points over the final 3 ½ quarters.  The kids played hard all the way up to the final play.”

What does Ohio's offense bring to the table?

Fouquier:  "They have a really good back that could play anywhere in the country.  Their offensive line wants to run the ball and will be very physical ? more physical than South Carolina.  They have a smart quarterback that will not be intimidated and their receiver run good routes.  It will be a big challenge.

“I'm sure Coach Solich has done a great job of preparing his team.  You can't prepare for the heat and humidity, but they'll be in great shape physically.  He's a disciplinarian and it will carry over to his team.”
