The loss drops the Cajuns to 28-9 and 13-5 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans improved to 20-16 and 8-7 in conference play.
Offensively, the Cajuns collected double-digit hits for the 23rd time this season, but only collected one extra base hit.
Matt Hicks had the extra base hit as he collected his first career homerun. Hicks was also one of just two Cajuns players to collect multiple hits on the day.
The only other player with multiple hits on the day for the Cajuns was Josh Logan, who collected three singles on the afternoon.
Gregory Harmon (1-1) took the loss for the Ragin' Cajuns. The sophomore retired the first five batters he faced, but surrendered four runs in the third inning to take the loss. Harmon worked 3.0 innings and scattered just three hits. He walked three and struck out three.
The Cajuns bullpen, which had been solid in all but one appearance on the season, surrendered 10 runs in less than five innings of work.
The Ragin' Cajuns threatened in the first inning. Jefferies Tatford got a one-out single to right field to start things off for the Cajuns. Jonathan Lucroy drew a base on balls to give the Cajuns a pair of base runners. Following a strikeout, Nolan Gisclair walked to load the bases for UL. The Cajuns were unable to plate any runner as a strikeout ended the inning and the threat.
UL was the first to scratch the scoreboard as they plated a runner in the top of the first.
The Trojans took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. A first pitch single started the inning. The Cajuns recorded the first out of the inning as Gisclair ran down a fly ball in foul territory. The runner stole second base, but it did not matter as Harmon walked the next batter. A fly out advanced the lead runner, but Harmon walked the bases loaded. A passed ball tied the score at 1-1, but a three-run homer by Kevin Weidlich gave the Trojans a 4-1 lead after three complete innings.
The Cajuns got a run back in the top of the fourth inning. Matt Hicks led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Justin Robichaux followed with a single to right field. Devon Bourque moved the runners with his team-leading fifth sacrifice bunt.
UL was able to cut the deficit to just one run in the top of the fifth inning. Gisclair lead off the inning with a single to left field. After the Trojans recorded the first out of the inning, Hicks lifted a 1-0 pitch over the left centerfield wall for his first career homerun. The two run shot trimmed the
The Trojans answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs of their own. After a strikeout,
Laughter started the bottom of the sixth inning off with a fly ball and a groundout for the first two outs. He worked the count full on the next batter and the payoff pitch just missed to put a runner on first base. The Trojans' pitcher Josh Dew helped his own cause as he drove a 1-0 pitch over the left centerfield wall to push the
The Trojans put up a five spot in the eighth inning to take a 10-run lead and win the game. Since the Sun Belt Conference has a 10-run rule on Sunday games the game ended in the eighth.
