series.
HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team lost a
heartbreaker in the final game of a three-game series with Southern
Mississippi. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless
ballgame, the Cajuns surrendered an RBI single to fall to the Golden Eagles
1-0.
The loss drops the Cajuns to 11-2 on the season, while the win improves USM
to 10-2.
With the score tied at 0-0, the Ragin' Cajuns entered the bottom of the
ninth. The Cajuns were able to sit down the first two batters of the inning
with a foul out and a ground out. The Golden Eagles managed to get the go
ahead runner on base with a single to right centerfield. A single up the
middle gave USM a pair of baserunners and the go ahead run in scoring
position. Southern Miss was able to score the only run of the game on an
RBI single to centerfield and claim the 1-0 victory.
Starting pitcher Buddy Glass picked up his first loss of the season. He
worked 8.2 innings, surrendering just one run. Glass walked just one batter
and struck out five. Glass did not allow a runner past first base until the fourth inning and only allowed one extra base hit on the afternoon. He left the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but was responsible for the two runners on base.
The Cajuns managed just four hits in the game in the pitchers' duel. Xavier
Alexander extended his team leading hitting streak to 12 games, while Devon
Bourque, Kolin Hatfield and Jonathan Lucroy all contributed a hit in the
game.
Southern Miss limited the Cajuns and UL did not have a runner reach second
base until the top of the eighth inning.
In the Cajuns half of the first inning, Nolan Gisclair drew a one-out walk,
but the Cajuns chances were thwarted by a inning-ending double play.
UL started he fourth inning with a single to right centerfield by Alexander.
The Cajuns were unable to get anything started as a pair of popups and a
caught stealing ended the inning.
In the eighth inning, Hatfield bunted for an infield single. Hatfield
became the only Cajuns' player to reach second base as he advanced on a wild pitch.
He would go no further as a pair of fly balls ended the UL threat.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 6, as they head to
Natchitoches, La. for a midweek game with in-state rival Northwestern State.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
