Buddy Glass worked 7.2 innings and Scott Hawkins hit a three-run homer to
lead the Cajuns.
LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team extended their season-
opening winning streak to nine games as they downed in-state rival Louisiana
Tech 5-1 on Tuesday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
The Cajuns used excellent pitching, timely hitting and solid defense to edge
the Bulldogs.
Starting pitcher Buddy Glass worked 7.2 innings, allowing just one unearned
run on the night. Glass struck out five batters while walking just two.
Glass did not allow a batter past second base until the eighth inning. He
surrendered seven hits on the night, but just one extra base hit as he
improved to 3-0 on the season.
Danny Farquhar came in to finish out the game, tossing the final 2.1
innings. He fanned two batters, allowing one hit and one walk.
The Ragin' Cajuns pieced together just six hits on the night, but benefited
from a three-run homerun by Scott Hawkins in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hawkins led the team with a pair of hits, his fifth consecutive game with
multiple hits. He finished the game with one run scored and a team-leading
three RBI.
Jonathan Lucroy was the only other Cajuns player to piece together more than
one hit. Lucroy had a pair of singles, but reached third on a three-base
error in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jefferies Tatford reached base three times on the night. The senior
outfielder was 1-for-2, but was hit by a pitch and walked. Tatford
currently
leads the team with four HBPs and eight walks.
Defensively, UL had one of their best performances. They turned a season
high four double plays on the night. The Cajuns committed just one error in
38 attempts.
The Cajuns manufactured a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Xavier
Alexander led off the game with a double to right field to extend his team
leading hitting streak to eight games. He advanced to third on a throwing
error by Louisiana Tech. An RBI groundout by Nolan Gisclair plated
Alexander
and gave the Cajuns the edge.
UL threatened in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Alexander
reached base on a throwing error by the Bulldogs. A walk gave the Cajuns a
pair of runners and a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position.
Lucroy walked to load the bases, but the Ragin' Cajuns' third inning-ending
double play of the night ended the Cajuns' threat.
The Ragin' Cajuns added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Devon
Bourque led off the inning with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Alexander moved
Bourque into scoring position. After a fly ball recorded the second out of
the inning, Lucroy hit a deep fly ball to left centerfield. The Louisiana
Tech left fielder was unable to catch the ball and it bounced off of his
glove, scoring the runner and allowing Bourque to score from second base.
In the sixth inning, the Cajuns padded their lead. Jefferies Tatford led
off
the inning with a walk and moved to second as Hatfield reached on a base on
balls. Scott Hawkins hit a three run homerun to left field to plate three
runners and give UL a 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Louisiana Tech
led
off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield. The
next
batter hit a routine ground ball that looked like it was going to be a
taylor-
made double play, but the Cajuns mishandled the ball, leaving both runners
safe on base. A single plated the runner and cut the UL lead to 5-1.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action tomorrow night as they play host to
Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m.
