NCAA REGIONALS BOUND: Cajuns to Make 16th All-Time Appearance, Sent to Baton Rouge

– The 15th-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns
softball team will be staying close to home for the 2006
NCAA Regionals which begin this weekend.
On Sunday, May 14, the NCAA Softball Selection Committee awarded Louisiana-Lafayette (48-10) an at-large berth into the “Field of 64” and shipped the Cajuns a mere 50 miles down Interstate 10 to Baton Rouge on the LSU campus.
The Ragin' Cajuns will begin their drive for another Women's College World Series berth in virtually their own back yard at LSU's Tiger Stadium in NCAA Regional No. 15 which will be held Friday-Sunday, May 19-21.
UL will be the No. 3 seed in the four-team NCAA Regional and will meet No. 2 seed North Carolina State (49-19) on Friday, May 19 at a time to be announced later.
This season's selection into the NCAA Tournament marked the eighth straight bid for Louisiana-Lafayette since the 1999 season and 16th in the last 17 years. It is the sixth straight selection for co-head coaches Stefni and Michael Lotief.
The Ragin' Cajuns program, the six-time defending Sun Belt Conference regular season champions, has missed NCAA Regionals play only once since 1990.
Joining the Cajuns and Wolf Pack in the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge will be host-LSU (51-12) and Princeton (34-17). LSU is the No. 1 seed and national No. 15 seed. Princeton will be the No. 4 seed.
UL will be appearing in an NCAA Regional tournament in its home state for the first time since 2002 when the Cajuns hosted a regional. The past three seasons UL was sent to Fullerton, Calif. (2003), Tucson, Ariz. (2004) and Norman, Oklahoma (2005).
The Ragin' Cajuns will be back in Baton Rouge for a NCAA Regional for the first time since the 2001 season – the inaugural season under the Lotiefs. That year UL and LSU met for the NCAA Regional title with LSU taking a 2-1 victory on May 20, 2001.
