LAFAYETTE – The 13th-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team picked up its third straight victory on its current homestand taking an 8-0 (6 inn.) victory over Stephen F. Austin in game one of a doubleheader here Friday afternoon at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.
The offense strung together 11 base hits – the team's highest output since 11 hits in game of a twinbill against Mississippi Valley State on March 14 – with eight hits coming from the top five in the lineup.
With the victory UL (26-6) moved to 20 games above .500 and extended its home winning streak to 32 straight games. The Cajuns improved to 18-0 at home in the 2006 season.
Holly Tankersley went 2-for-3 at the plate and posted a game-high three RBI.
Brittany Bryant drew two walks to reach 108 in her career and tie Alana Addison's school record for career walks.
Two batters hit by pitch and one walk issued by SFA pitcher Traci Moore combined with three base hits resulted in four runs crossing the plate for UL in the opening frame.
The Cajuns half of the first inning started with Codi Runyan getting hit by a Moore pitch. Danyele Gomez singled into left field and Ashley Evans drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
The second hit by pitch occurred with Tankersley at bat forcing home Runyan with the Cajuns first run of the contest. Deserea Griffin followed with a single into shallow right field scoring Gomez for a 2-0 lead and reloading the bases.
Jessica Lemoine then came through with a two-out single into right center field scoring Tankersley and Evans for a 4-0 advantage.
Lacey Bertucci's 14th home run of the season in the second inning increased the UL lead to 5-0.
Tankersley got on board to start the fifth inning. Desi Chatman pinch hit for Griffin and delivered a double off the top of the wall. Tankersley rounded the bases and crossed home plate with the Cajuns' sixth run of the inning.
In the next at bat, Bryant worked the count full and fouled off a couple of pitches before being issued the record-tying free pass. UL had two runners on base with on outs after Bryant's walk, but SFA escaped further trouble by getting three straight outs.
It was the bat of Tankersley in the sixth inning that help the Cajuns finish off the LadyJacks and end the contest early with the mercy rule.
Gomez began the sixth with a single that bounced through the left side of the infield. Bertucci reached on a fielder's choice and Gomez was forced out at second base for the first out.
Evans followed with a single that dropped in front of SFA center fielder Carrie Woydziak. Bertucci rounded second base forcing Woydziak to throw the ball back into the infield allowing Evans to move up an additional base and give UL two runners in scoring position.
Tankersley cashed in and delivered a double into the left centerfield gap scoring both runners and moving the UL lead to 8-0 and ending the game early on the run rule.
Krystal Lewallen registered her 15th victory of the season improving her ledger to 15-4 overall and 10-0 at Lamson Park. Lewallen struck out six batters and posted her seventh shutout of the campaign.
Louisiana-Lafayette improved to 9-1 against Midwest Region teams.
The Cajuns evened the all-time series with SFA at 4-4 and picked up their fourth straight win in the series.
The two teams returned to the field at approximately 5:25 p.m., to complete the doubleheader.
