LAFAYETTE – Northwestern State scored six runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to break open a 1-0 game en route to posting a 8-0, five-inning mercy rule win over Prairie View A&M here Sunday in game 14 of the 2nd Annual Louisiana's Mardi Gras Classic.
With the win, NSU finished tournament play 4-1 and won its third straight game overall.
The Demons got off to a slow start against the winless Panthers getting only a single run in the first inning when Nicole Martin scored on a throwing error by PV second baseman Amberly Fuller.
PV's Trisha Anderson held her own through the first three innings, holding NSU to just one hit.
Morgan McMillin scattered three hits to hold the Panthers off the board until the Demons' offense got untracked in the fourth inning.
After Amanda Glenn flied out to center field to begin the inning, Kelly Corliss began the NSU attack with a single into center field and advanced to second on a fielding error by PV's Rosaline Ash. After a Lindsey Gorski infield single, Corliss moved over to third. Gorski's infield hit was followed by five RBI base hits and one groundout RBI that pushed the Demons lead to 7-0.
Northwestern State ended the game early when McMilin dumped an RBI single into center field to score Katrina Walker from second base to make it 8-0 and enforce the eight-run mercy rule.
NSU finished as tournament runner-up while PVAMU ended winless (0-5).
The game lasted 1 hour and 18 minutes - the shortest game of the Mardi Gras Classic.
